thread not going as you planned?
it did kinda bother me that a golfer was the top of the list, too, but Tiger destroyed the playing field in a pretty competitive time in that shitty sport. All of the golf purists and those in the profession do not like Tiger much, fwiw.
lance pretty much destroyed the field in his sport for ten years, too.
i'm pretty sure that nobody in baseball or football could really be mentioned as the greatest in the decade.

Also, I've know surgeons that have had to perform surgery for 8 hours standing on their feet the whole time. Talk about stamina. I guess they are great athletes, too.
We need to throw in those people that do those 24 hour dance marathons, also.

who are the greatest athletes by decade, crab?
2000-2010: Tiger Woods?
1990-2000: Michael Jordan?
1980-1990: Wayne Gretzky?
1970-1980: Muhammad Ali?
I see where you're coming from...

Clearly standing and walking are the same thing

I would've had Federer for this decade. What I found interesting about this thread was how sensitive the cycling people are. No one really defended golf, but the people act like it's the freaking decathalon.

i think RF would have been a solid choice, too, but he's not as high-profile as Tiger. dude's rewriting the history of that sport, but as american tennis has declined, so has the popularity. no connors and mcenroe...no greatest athlete of the decade for federer :( simply because america didn't watch enough tennis.
I also like Lance Armstrong simply because of his story: 10/2
he deserves the accolades he receives.

Agreed.

cycling = athlete
golf = non-athlete
golf = non-athlete

Based on what?

Per webster's dictionary.
Athlete:a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina
The Tour de France is not only an athletic event, but quite possibly one of the most grueling athletic events in the world. Its also a team sport, so strategy is involved.

golf takes agility, skill and precision, but when you compare the greatest athletes of the decade among the past few decades, it's not hard to see how crab and a lot more people are disappointed to see a golfer as the athlete of the decade:
jordan
gretzki
ali
jordan
gretzki
ali

That's fine. I can see an argument saying Woods wasn't the greatest athlete of the decade. I just get tired of people claiming golfers are not athletes at all.

not saying I agree with this list 100% (I see some serious errors on it), but I found it funny where golf ended up...one spot in front of cheerleading

Who are you referring to with this? Tiger did more for the sport than anyone. Unless you're referring to club pros who don't like the people coming out to the course. Players love him, cause you can even make a living on the mini tours now
