re: Does it feel like major sports championships aren't as celebrated as they once were?

NBA fans don't really watch basketball. They're more interested in who dissed whom, whose baby mama is stepping out with another player, what instahoe is banging which player, etc.

People generally dont care as much and the average person is significantly less interested given the division of entertainment offerings into on-demand streaming platforms.
Lastly, young people are FAR less likely to care. They're more into social media and video games.

We've grown up?
Nah....or adults realized players don't care and so fans need to get back to their horses like Jokic's indifference when he won the now silly NBA title.
Too much information and stuff to quickly digest and move on? Yeah.
That championship, like all now, lasts 5 minutes in the news cycle of people's busy lives.
Sports relevance/importance in grown arse adults has rightfully been dying a slow death on everyone's priorities list unless they have no emotional intelligence, job or family...ergo teenagers, ergo the posters who post about the Yankees and Dongs all day long on here.

ESPN was once on in the background of my house the majority of the time I was home. Once they went to all the argumentative talk show woke bullshite I haven't turned it on except for LSU games in years. I would imagine they are somewhat discussing the Thunder win today, unless they somehow found a way to turn it into a LeBron discussion of course.

You're getting older, though I will say this NBA finals barely popped up in my feed and anything else I do.

Same.
I think that's what's at play here. There's so many viewing options available and everybody watches different things.

We also all don't watch Sportscenter 6x a day like we did when we were kids.

Sports radio is brutal these days. I might flip the channels in my truck hoping to find out what happened in the game last night, but NOPE. It's all as you described.
Also, I think w/ the explosion of online betting and fantasy leagues, a lot of degenerates are just tapped out and burned out by the time the championship rolls around.

It does feel like sports in general is not nearly as important to the average person as it used to be, and the coverage levels probably reflect that. Many of the reasons have been pointed out, way more competition in the entertainment sphere and as older fans grew out of it the younger fans haven't fully replaced them.

I was thinking about this the other day. It doesn’t even take but less than 24 hours for the Sports Heads to break their next season power rankings after a championship. The 24 /7 cycle mixed with idiotic takes from the likes of Ryan Clark have sucked all of the fun out of pro sports. And I don’t care. Let it all burn to the ground.

I think a big difference now is that people have more distractions...streaming video services like Netflix and Max, plus YouTube...and then all of the social media platforms...live sports can take a back seat and people can easily watch highlights after the fact whenever they want. Just a different world.

More distractions now but major titles (NFL/CFB/College Basketball/NBA/MLB/NHL) are still covered pretty good.

Maybe it's the internet age, and the 24/7 news cycle
This is the answer. Back before the internet and cable TV, there wasn't as much news about Pro Sports. You had to wait for the morning paper and games weren't televised like they are today. Except for Braves and Hawks on TBS and Cubs and Bulls on WGN, teams and game weren't on TV everyday, you had to wait till the weekend. That's what made Monday Night Football so awesome, Howard Cosell's halftime highlights were what everyone wanted to see because there were no other ways to see what happened in other games around the country. In ways, I preferred the old times, less on TV really gave you something to look forward too but then again, the ability to see what happens in real time is amazing.

The Stanley Cup and NBA Finals were never as talked about as much as the other sports. The NBA was popular there for a minute but they have since fallen off the map. More people tuned in to watch the College Men's Basketball National Championship Game between Florida and Houston than did Game 7 of the NBA Finals last night. The World Series is a little more niche but there are hard core fans within the markets in which the teams play - so there are HUGE celebrations when a team wins the World Series.

No one cares about the NBA but the players still making a killing.

Yeah it seems like championships used to feel more final. Once a champion was crowned, that's basically the last we'd hear about that sport for the next 4 months or so until the next season kicked off. Now as soon as the season ends, there's power rankings for next year, discussions about the draft, who's going to be traded where, where are free agents signing, etc. Its like all the major sports have a 12 month season now so we're quick to forgot about who just won and rush to get the next season started.
