The deal would send Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to the Dodgers in exchange for James Loney, Rubby De La Rosa, Jerry Sands, Ivan De Jesus and Allen Webster.

Does anyone realize how hamstrung these contracts have made the Boston Red Sox? Because of these three and John Lackey's, the Red Sox were in no position to improve their team.

This.

As much as I like AGon, its not like he was incredibly outperforming his contract.

Beckett sucks, Crawford isn't worth what we paid him, and who cares about Punto.

Has there ever been a waiver deal of this magnitude?

I can't think of any trade of this magnitude

I think that's what brings the magnitude and I would guess there has never this much money involved in a trade

Yeah, Boston (as of now) has $106-mil committed to next year's payroll. If they shed Beckett, Crawford, and Gonzo....they drop to $47-million. Even if they have to pick up HALF the salaries they come out decent.

This is really a win-win for both clubs. LA picks up some decent players for minor leaugers and Boston gets a shite ton of salary relief from some TERRIBLE contracts.

Side note: Is Theo still one of, it not THE, best GMs in baseball?

I take this with a grain of salt given that many GMs are merely carrying out the orders of their bosses.

NESN just reported that the Dodgers are one of three teams included in Crawford's contract as no-trade teams. Even if that's true, one would expect he would not invoke it.

They still had the farm this week and the last time they were in Frisch and swept the giants.

ETA : but, give me gonzles..... I really don't want to take on the salaries of becket and Crawford too.

Getting rid of Beckett was at least the best part here, dude was terrible. That said, totally incredible just how much $$ was involved
