U can have a quick glove and be a poor 2nd baseman bc u have no range/good feet etc.
Scott Rolen and Adrian Beltre both come to mind on this...they both have two of the best gloves in the league at the hot corner but they're slow as molasses.

2nd Baseman typical pros vs. 3rd baseman:
Range
Speed (Basepaths)
Bunting ability
Contact hitter
3rd baseman pros vs. 2nd baseman:
Arm Strength
Power hitter
General strength
I think glove work is a push at both positions.
You decide which of those characteristics are "more athletic"

2nd basemen seem to be more athletic as a whole, but 3rd is the more difficult position to play.
2nd basemen have to cover more ground, but 3rd has to have better reflexes and a very good arm.
I played both. This comment is spot on...

Try putting a slow-footed, good reflexed, strong armed player at 2B and let me know how that works out for ya.......
You don't have to be very athletic to play 3B.......just able to glove a ball and make an accurate throw.
2B has to cover lots of ground.....work with the SS.....take cut-off throws on a regular basis....turn double plays......have better footwork.....etc.

no way. 2nd is easiest position on the field besides RF.

bolded is the only thing that is athletic.

in a little league game w/ few if any left handed hitters yes
in the majors -- no

yeah...ok
If you don't think...for the most part...in HS/College/Pro....that 2B is more of an athletic position, then

3rd is harder to play than 2nd. But you have to be a slightly better athlete to play 2nd. Just because there is more lateral moving and general running.

Only because you have a much greater chance of having a screamer hit at you with little time to react.......I'll give you that.
As far as it being more physically demanding.....no

in reading all the posts it is clear to me that you need to define your idea of athletic
For what its worth I feel that 3rd is the more difficult position, but under the classic idea of athleticism including speed, agility, etc. I would tend to believe that 2nd baseman are, in general, "more athletic"

2nd base has more athletic players than 3rd.
There is a reason that they move old cathers to 3rd base and not 2nd. And no Biggio wasn't old when they moved him.

I played some of both. I preferred 3rd b/c I always fielded the hard hit balls better than the slow rollers(more react than think). Also first time I played 2nd the game prior to ours the 2nd basemen got taken out turning a double play and had a compound fracture of his shin bone(when you see a guy thrashing around in pain with blood all over his leg it scares the piss out of you). I didn't like the thought of having my back to the runner.
Also 2nd base you had more balls hit with weird spin than at SS and 3rd. When I played most 2nd basemen were good fielders but small.

Matters what you consider athletic..
2nd baseman usually play pretty far back and they have to cover a lot of ground, but more have time and room to cover it.. They usually don't have to through very far, and usually aren't power hitters
3rd baseman has to have a good arm, and be able to judge quick grounders, line drives, and bunts while not having to cover quite as much area
I believe 3rd is harder
a 3rd baseman will almost always be bigger, and stronger than a 2nd baseman
a 2nd baseman will almost always be smaller, faster, and very agile so.. yeah

2nd. by a lot.
3rd is just reflexes and an arm and the willingness to come in for the bunt while knowing someone may hit one right down your teeth.
PS: 3rd is the easiest position on the field. not much running, no athletic jumps & turns. the toughest play is coming in fast to get a ball at your feet and making a throw. all the other positions have more challenging issues.
I usually caught. I got to play 3B as a rest day.

Charging and fielding a bunt and making a throw on the run is the toughest play to make on the infield.

I couldn't disagree more.
If SS is the best athlete how come a lot of SS and 3rd basemen are interchangeable? A 2nd basemen generally has to weak of an arm to play the left side of the infield and are usually the weakest hitters on the field. Faster doesn't mean a better athlete in baseball. It doesn't matter how fast you run if you can't hit.
