seems like they would to me. money is a pretty big barrier of entry into the sport. obviously there will be exceptions, but i'd guess that lots of them do.

It's really expensive to become a touring pro. Aside from a select few of the top amateurs, they all need some sort of financial backing from either family or sponsors. If you don't have that financial backing, the odds of succeeding are really low.

Rory McIlroy's dad worked 8 am to midnight every day for years to pay for Rory's golfing career.

its a crazy story to hear but his dad was a janitor from 8 til noon, then bartender from noon til midnight. his mom worked a factory night shift to help out

Almost all the time. Or from Club Pro families. The golfing part wouldnt be that costly but the lessons are.
Its all about getting to college and playing well.
Once you are in college or mini tours, if you are good, someone will back you.

Growing up in a country club is really helpful.

You will find a handful of players out on tour that didn't come from money. shite is expensive to practice enough to get good at ...

It costs the same amount to teach a kid how to play golf as it does to hunt or fish.

Yeah, Tennis and golf are very expensive sports to play. Djokovic's parents had to take out all kinds of loans to pay for his training and travel costs and were barely able to make ends meet because of that. That's why you don't see many blacks or people of color playing those sports compared to baseball, basketball, football, and soccer.

Where I'm from we had 2 people make it on tour and 4 play on mini tours including one of the best LSU players of all time. None of then were overly rich and they grew up and played at a shitty course.

You serious Clark? To get to the elite level, you're talking about practicing everyday. Unless you have your own driving range, that shite ain't cheap!

Can't disagree with you there. Some of the kids who didn't have money, probably worked at a golf course, so they got to play and practice for free. Had a friend who didn't have any money, make it by doing this.

I worked at a golf course and knew a couple of the guys I worked with did this. I personally suck as at golf and just wanted the tips (cash and cold beverage alike)

We had a few that was like that too. Nothing wrong with that. You can make some nice money, for a high school or college kid, by making tips at the local country club. I had an old man that would pay me a $100 bucks a week to clean his golf cart.

I know I was obsessed with golf growing up and seems all the people I played competitively were from well-off families. I am not an exception, I am very lucky my dad works so hard and could supply me with necessary tools to be pretty good at golf.

Good clubs and lessons from good instructors and green fees all add up to a very expensive sport.
