Seems like a high-character guy and a decent coach but the dress like joe pa schtick is pretty lame

He should at least bring them some much needed stability

but his recruiting ability is terrible for a program like Miami.
He's recruited about as well as a team could given what they've faced the last few years.

There's talent on that team, no doubt.

Would also give anything to see butch back

Isn't he on a ban or something? It would be cool to see him back there but I doubt Shalalalalala wants him there after UNC.

Yeah, the talent is better than one would think given the results. Golden's problem is that he's just not that good of a coach. Golden looks the part and talks the part but he's just overmatched and truthfully he was overmatched at Temple. Golden never beat a team with a winning record at Temple I believe...I know he never beat a team with a winning record in MAC conference play.

And, Golden puts his personal life ahead of the team. D'Onofrio is Golden's friend and (I believe I spelled his name correctly if not correct me please) is still his D-Coordinator?! That speaks volumes.

The team has no identity on offense and defense and it's been that way since Golden took over.

Miami needs to try to bring Butch back or Cristobal or go after Lane Kiffin. But, I think if they go after one of those coaches the school administration will have to get real and pony up the money for a quality coaching staff.

They brought in Butch to clean up the program and he did, relative to the 80's-90's.

They did, but I wouldn't say he ran a clean program. He's never been clean. That being said, the man can recruit and coach!

I think Al Golden is a good coach. I don't think the admin at Miami is supporting athletics right now though. They seem to do that in waves. Also, Miami recruiting really got put in a holding pattern with all the "waiting on sanctions" for a year or two. I think that's catching up with them.

See I can't buy that completely. USC still was able to sign great players under more strict sanctions than the sanctions Miami placed themselves under.

Kinda not kinda. I think everyone thought USC wasn't going to get sanctioned. When has the NCAA ever really sanctioned anyone before then.

The report came out on Miami then the NCAA investigated it then screwed it up then did nothing then did something then did nothing and on and on. I just remember a lot of recruits going to other schools.

Also, there are more options for kids in Florida. They can go to FSU, Florida, USF, Georgia, bama, AU, LSU, Clemson, USCe, etc. Kids from Cali at that time were either going to USC or Oregon.

I'm not saying that's the main reason for poor recruiting, but I think it swayed a few major prospects.

I just think Golden doesn't have a great relationship with the streets in Miami and you know you have to have a relationship with the streets down there to recruit the best players and that's why he brought Ice Harris in.

Butch is no dirtier than any other good coach. He's been associated and hired coaches that are dirty so the inference that he's dirty is there. But, what good coach doesn't hire some shady coaches here and there?

Not saying he's any dirtier than any other coach. But some of the Shapiro stuff at Miami was under his watch and all the kids getting suspended at UNC was under his watch as well.

someone on her posted something a long time ago about Butch , that he had such a strict process of how things were done that the ncaa or compliance could never catch him for anything.

Golden worked miracles at temple. in the few years prior to him getting there, they were the absolute worst D1A program; i remember back in 04 or 05 temple had a 3 game stretch were they were outscored about 200-7. They were worse than idaho is now.

My understanding of the problems at Miami is that they just don't have enough to offer recruits. Poor facilities, no fan base, a stadium 30 minutes from campus, etc. Additionally, the school is trying to distance themselves from the "U" persona and not embrace it, which would potentially help recruiting.

.

This is pretty much IT in a nutshell. The facilities suck and the gameday experience cannot compete with SEC and most other ACC schools with on campus stadiums. They've also have a poor record of putting players into the NFL like they did between the mid 80's and the early 2000's.

Miami has led the Coastal division in recruiting for 3 straight years, but you can't tell by watching them play.

I am pro-Golden compared to many down here.. I don't know how much better we can get until a former player or coach wants to take the job. don't think he is a bad coach though
