Fans of historically or very recently great teams that have fallen off a bit seem to be the most out on this new era.

Obviously sour grapes/shitty fans have to be considered, but I think there’s more to it.

It seems much easier now to say “eh, whatever I don’t really care” about a loss or season.

Yes, this is the first year since 07 that this many teams are live for the title, imo. Georgia is the favorite at +385. Michigan was +160 last year. It’s not totally equitable due to the change in format, but the point remains

There are more games, sure. You think Clemson, Arizona State, Boise, Indiana, or SMU have serious chance to win it all? Throw ND and Penn St in there too.

The smallest spread of the first round games is -7.

Could there be an upset? Sure. But no first round underdog is winning 3 straight.

n a weird way, I think it might be. You have so much roster churn year over year now that there’s likely less cohesion in the locker room and on the field. I have a feeling that we’re not going to see any of the “traditional dynasties” anymore (for better or worse) because you can’t maintain that kind of a culture when a minimum of a third of your guys leave in January. A handful of programs “just knowing how to win” might be a thing of the past.

I think the higher roster turnover still favors the more talented team. I think what will prevent dynasties will be the inability to stockpile qb talent. The teams that won at a high level have had fairly consistent QB play and those qb’s were usually in the system for multiple seasons. That’s almost impossible in the portal/nil era.

But I think the CFB champ will still come from a handful of teams. It’ll just be which of those teams has the best qb play.

In my opinion, once money is introduced into any sport or situation for that matter, it ruins it, or at least taints it. This is why I do not like the NFL

Yep. NFL is really struggling for viewers.

That’s a weird thing to have a “feel” about. I mean there are measurable numbers out there to know if viewers are increasing or decreasing.

Feelings over facts on this board, bro.

Nobody watches college football anymore in my small town. We only drool over our 16 year old football idols.

Money has been in the sport forever. You just don’t like who’s getting the money now. How you feel is fine, just don’t be dishonest about it

Money has always been in the sport, but the problem that has always been there is the massive, massive inequality of penalty assessments over the years. Larger schools get slaps on the wrists while smaller schools get shafted.

Now, the big schools get to load in the money they’ve always had, legally, while smaller schools never did have it. The unlimited transfer rule is dogshit to small programs as good players can be bought out with no recourse to the small school, plus the APR aspects that still apply (madness).

Now we have a small school (smu) making noise and it is pissing off other blue bloods and I find it completely ironic and utterly hilarious.

I watch my school, but that is it. The magic is gone.

The only fans claiming to leave and whine are fans of the big schools who are suddenly not nearly as dominant now that every team can now pay players legally. So, the spoiled fans of Bama, LSU, UGA who believe it’s their right to buy players and win 10 games a year may stop watching. Fine. But every other school is increasing their fanbase rapidly.

For instance, my team, GT is playing Vandy in a worthless bowl. Yet, both teams not only sold out their ticket allocation within a couple of days but they asked for and received triple the initial amount, Why? Because fans of mid level teams are now excited. UGA beat GT 45-0 just 3 years ago. 36 months, The whole world watched us lose in 8 overtime’s to them. Schools like GT improve by adding 10 4stars while the UGA’s have lost 10 4 stars. And we are all seeing how quickly parity kicks in.

College football is growing and the upcoming playoffs will grab the sports world for a month because nothing else is going on the next month.

This may sound like sour grapes but it really does suck when there is no guarantee you have any of the same guys from year to year. I get that I am rooting for the hogs and the team changes anyway but it's at a ridiculous level right now. In the past I might care about making this bowl even if it's lower but if 20 of the players I've heard of aren't playing the bowl why should I care as a fan?

Come on now. Fans root for the jerseys not the players. That’s why Eagles fan can hate Saquon one day and the next day they love him. I don’t care about any player. All I care about is rooting for my uniform. Players come and go. Coaches come and go. It’s all about the uniform. The portal is freaking awesome.

An article last updated this month has the Top 10 most watched CFB games in TV history. Dates range from 1991 to 2015. If CFB viewership was actually increasing, there would be something on that list from the past 3 years or so.
The sport is dying.
In the past people generally only got angry at players when they broke the law. It's different now. The sport won't last with things as they are.

I can honestly say I still watch but not nearly as passionate. Don’t really bother with recruiting or getting to know players names.

Younger guys won’t have a clue what I am talking about.

It’s not NIL for me. That’s actually good for CFB if it’s controlled.

The problem is the transfer portal and NIL together without limitations.

As a fan of a school that is in a tier 1 conference I still definitely pay attention. It does make following recruiting less important. If I was a fan of a school that was not in the SEC or B1G I would probably lose interest to an extent.

For the first time in history, we have 12 teams and 12 fanbases on Dec. 14 who are still excited about the season. Prior to today we would have had at most 4 and usually just 2.

Sure, the champ will come from a handful of teams - that’s the same in every sport. We all know the Super Bowl and World Series will be won by 1 of 6 teams we can all name right now.

Expanding the playoffs keep more fanbases involved long into December. The other way had 70% of teams out of the mix by the end of September. Many on this board are fans of teams who simply lost too many games early and were eliminated by November 1. That’s why it’s easy to claim you’ll walk away because you lost hope early. Welcome to what most of us have been dealing with. Playoffs and auto qualifiers keep everyone interested. This year you laugh at Clemson but one year that will be your team and you’ll be watching and spending that cash.
