re: Dipping in college baseball

I was at a high school baseball game last year with my kids and there were several players dipping. They had the skoal cans in the dugout and I saw them putting dips in. Honestly I didn’t think much of it b/c I did the same thing in high school.

What's funny to me is why baseball appears to be the only sport where this happens. It would be hilarious to see a dude running down the basketball court, make a 3, and then run by the opposing bench and spit a huge one right at the feet of the opposing head coach.
When I played and I’m sure the same now we had pockets in our pants. Football and basketball don’t. Baseball slower paced and less running. I couldn’t imagine trying to dip playing football, basketball, or soccer.

I played at MTSU from 2003-2007, and about 75% of our team, myself included, dipped during games. Most of us tried to be conspicuous, but umpires definitely know and don’t give a shite. Our head coach always had a dip in from the first pitch to the last out.
We only had a few games on TV each year, but nothing changed about enforcement.

Its banned but the umps don't really give a shite. The most they'll do is tell you to take it out. I've watched our coach put one in while talking to the ump before the meeting at home plate and all the ump did was jokingly say "you better take that out before first pitch" and then laugh.

Not sure if it was frowned as much on that back then though. I'm only a few years older than you but things have changed much more probably just a tad after that (2007) regarding smoking and even later regarding dipping. I'd imagine for the most part the umps are pretty logical and not too worried about it with dipping. Smoking is the big no no that people would be willing to start WW3 over damn near.
I quit smoking several years ago. I'll never forget I was working the ambulance at a football game and these older men walked out to the edge outside the stadium to smoke, away from everybody else. I mean probably 75 yards away. This overweight fat arse literally sprinted out towards them hollering to tell them they can't smoke around the stadium. We ended having to transport the idiot due to chest pain.

Whenever we play the other college in our city their old arse 3rd base/head coach goes out the 1st base clubhouse walks, around the stands, and comes back in through the 3rd base side so can smoke a cig during the games. Its awesome.

That's actually pretty funny. Even as a former smoker, which are usually the worst one's to the people who still smoke, it just doesn't bother me. Most people nowadays are pretty considerate with it, most are, not all. I'm out in the public every day all day for both jobs I work. I rarely see someone who doesn't step aside or walk off from the crowd while smoking. I don't have panic attacks and start crying the few times a year I catch a whiff of a cigarette, it blows my mind the people that do.

I disagree completely that it should be allowed. Should we allow football players to be shot up on the sidelines in view of people too?
The idea that it doesn't affect kids is purely BS. Furthermore, it's not good for the players/ coaches and sure as hell doesn't make the game better. I played all my life too, if you can't not use tobacco during the game that's on you it's not and shouldn't be some unwritten allowable rule that's laughable.
No other sport allows it, no reason for baseball too.

It doesn't really matter to me what they do, I don't play anymore. But just to ask, how does it actually make the game worse? When we did it you could hardly tell we had a dip in, you spit once every few minutes, baseball players do that anyways that don't dip. How is that affecting the game badly?
I realize it's not good for you, but damn, so is alot of shite. You gonna tell everybody drinking a coke after the game that should be outlawed also?

Why stop there, no more beer and hot dogs sold at the game either, they’re bad for you too.

I think Tony Gwynn's death at such a young age +/-50 years old, gave what was already a "movement" more impetus. And, of course, when there's a "movement" especially where any form of tobacco is concerned, all manner of courtesy is tossed aside.
Some anti-tobacco activists will say that the spitting is discourteous, as well, and worse. the "spit-cup."
But damn, they can be as mean and disgusting as they want and, because it's tobacco, they feel perfectly justified in being overbearing and domineering.

i hid it better while playing in high school, i played in college in NAIA so really no one gave a frick if we dipped or not. Im sure we weren't supposed to but umpires rarely concerned themselves with the players dipping

You dip for the buzz right? Does that buzz help you play better? No, of course not. Therefore, its bad for the game.
I don't give a damn about dipping in general. But I'm saying its poor form to allow anything on the field. Should we allow the starters on the bench to drink some beers?
Kids always want to be a pro. If they see a pro on tv dipping, they are going to want to dip. It starts out with seeds and gum until they can find the real stuff. I'm not trying to be a poon about it, I'm saying play the damn game of baseball like its a sport. Just because you don't run a lot like basketball or football, doesn't mean it should be okay to allow "because its tradition" whatever that means.

People who dip regularly don't get a buzz. Having nicotine in their system calms their nerves just like anyone who is addicted to ay form of nicotine. Like when a smoker becomes agitated when they hadn't had a cigarette in a while its the same for dip but probably worse because Im pretty sure there is more nicotine in dip.

And it's hitting your bloodstream directly compared to a cig... which hits indirectly.

actually smoking gets nicotine in your system more quickly than does dipping.
