Considered the greatest defensive 1st Base of all time and a pretty solid contact hitter with moderate power. A key figure to some great teams that won championships.

11 Gold Gloves
1 MVP
2 World Series
2 Solver Slugger
6 All Star
.296 career average
.384 OBP
2182 H
1071 RBI
1124 R

Was there some claim it affected his performance? Otherwise, who cares?

Funny thing is we were watching the KH episode and that got me to look up his career stats. I just assumed he was in the HOF, and was surprised to see he really didn't come close to making it.

I can't speak to how he was with the Mets, but with the Cardinals he was one of the toughest outs with the game on the line. He could work any lefty pitcher for walks and flares to left field. A line drive machine. Then there was his defense.

I've never before or since seen a 1st baseman who would charge so hard in bunt situations he could field bunts on the 3rd base side of the mound. Absolutely fearless. He was also so great at positioning to catch pick-off attempts (crouching in foul territory with his glove inches above the bag), MLB changed the rules after complaints from Davey Johnson to force him to be inside the lines. (All he did was position his body down the right field line).

By any metric he was a winner, but his overall stats are probably just a little bit shy.

Is he? His 11 consecutive Gold Gloves is impressive but his #46 rank in fielding percentage (.9942) all-time makes me wonder about that. Hernandez did play 17279.0 innings at first, which is more than a lot of other players ahead of him but less than:

Rafael Palmeiro (#43 @ .9943 with 18505.0 innings)
Steve Garvey (#10 @ .9959 with 17965.1 innings)
Todd Helton (#8 @ .9962 with 18559.1 innings)

only slightly more than John Olerud (#18 @ .9954 with 17230.0 innings).

Also, If you look up any list of best defensive first-basemen, he doesn't even make the top 20.

He wasn't even the best defensive first baseman of his era, his only claim might be the 11 consecutive Gold Gloves.

That's his only real shot at getting in because his stats won't get him there.

I can’t believe Will Clark and Don Mattingly aren’t in the Hall of Fame.

Dale Murphy too.

These guys were the best players in the game.

Yet they put in guys (compilers) like Harold Baines, Bert Blyleven, Ted Simmons, and Bruce Sutter.

You obviously didn't watch him much, let alone day after day.
