Two things are true here

1. The refs clesrly fricked up

2. But, the refs also told Dallas 70 was eligible, not 68. So the play would have been a completely different scenario from the start without the refs being idiots

You think if a ref is going to fix a game, he'd do it in the most public way possible to bring the most possible attention to himself?

They are untouchable. It doesn't matter. He got paid. If you don't think these officials are gambling on the games when they have all the power you are out of your mind.

NFL refs earn $200 plus grand a year and it’s not a full time job. Bill Vinovich, who headed the crew that blew saints nfc champ game, is CPA and was calling college basketball. His punishment for blowing that call was officiating Super Bowl 2 years later. I will never go to an NFL game again in my life. Pay them a little more money, but demand it be the rip full time job. Run them though training sessions throughout the year and demand fitness levels be Maintained.

The ref goes to the defense and tells them which lineman reported, the defense isn't left to guess.

This is true, but the visual component adds just a bit more attention than just hearing the number.

This really isn't that hard.

Campbell briefed the refs pregame that they have a 2-pt play where a lineman will report as an eligible receiver. Ref says great, I'll be aware and look for it.

#70 reports eligible several times during the game.

On the 2-pt play, ref sees #70 running at him like a mad man as two other random OL meander over to him for some reason (sneaky Lion plan to confuse the D). Here's the play the coach told me to look out for. Through some combo of 70 gesticulating and 68 not being clear, he announces 70 as the eligible receiver to the D as well as over the stadium PA. Lions players and staff for some reason fail to comprehend this and correct him prior to the snap.

I have never in my football watching career seen a player run to the ref to tell him "I'm not eligible on this play." Or to "clarify" who is or is not eligible.

Face it Detroit, you tried to get too clever and you played yourself.

God in heaven, please don’t comment if you don’t know the rules. Here’s a hint, there was a reason that he had to go report.

Looks to me like this was a strategy of the Lions. Have multiple guys go toward the official to make it confusing. It’s a trick play remember.

And it burned them. It’s that simple.

Except Dan Campbell explained the play, in his words, “to a t” before the game to ref. So it shouldn’t have been difficult for the ref to follow

It’s why he was so livid after the play and can be seen screaming “I told you!” over and over again

Here’s #70 right after the play screaming “I didn’t say a fricking word!” LINK

Here’s Dan Campbell saying “I told you!” over and over, presumably about how he discussed this trick play prior to the game LINK

So Campbell was playing 3d chess all game by having Skipper (70) report as being eligible. Then on the play to score they were preparing for, they change it up and have 68 report. The ref’s screwed up and claim it was 70 the same as before. The defense covers 70 and the ref’s assume 70.

This is exactly what I thought at the time. I told my SIL when 58 walked over with 68, Dallas would be watching 3 lineman, rather than just 70. I’d guess BA messed this up.
