That's what I'm thinking happened. I'm not sure its any better other than the fact that he didn't start with ill intentions (in my scenario). Someone found him, they were 'dating' and then he was making shite up to tell people.

well since ND has already put out a statement that Te'o is the victim of a hoax, its already been confirmed the girlfriend didnt exist.

I think the frankenstein theory is more in line with happened.
And that implcates Teo even more since he knew she was fake, but had to go along with it. So he got blackmailed kinda.
So to a point he was a victim, but he knew what he was doing when he lied.
People had her twitter, if she said she was dying people would have learned about it quickly and he had to react to cover his tracks of said fake girlfriend.

They mean that the "girlfriend" is a hoax and Te'o was manipulated into believing she was real.
