I said back before the Heisman presentation that Te'o should thank his late Grandmother and Girfriend for his publicity and all the awards he won and I was

Most likely what happened IMO:
He went along with the whole girlfriend thing.
Said fake girlfriend turned on him and went wild, saying she died and he didn't know what to do.
What was the timeline of events of the gf death vs his grandmother's death?
I think he made up the gf and the person behind it went all frankenstein and he felt he had to go along with it.
