Then, when Te'o learns that he was the "victim" of a hoax, he decides to continue to reference the story of his fake girlfriend's death to garner more attention and sympathy and fails to come clean or correct the record at any point in time.
Making Te'o mentally deficient to a pretty remarkable extent given everything he has accomplished in his life and making him a somewhat despicable person.

It's going to take Deadspin, Busted Coverage, TMZ, etc. to bust this story. ESPN is in full cover-up mode. Sports Illustrated will be the same way, as will most of the sports media that pushed the "poor Manti Te'o" story.
Looks like Deadspin is farther ahead of this story than ESPN at the moment, because every "source" ESPN throws out, Deadspin is there to dispute that source.

Sadly, even if there is a huge story that comes out proving ESPN covered this up then worked to side with Te'o, it won't really damage them
We are in the minority of ESPN with our thoughts. They are do big of an empire to be hurt by anything.
I think it will do a lot for internet journalism, though, specifically Deadspin and the likes

They are going to say he did try and visit her several times but she kept blowing him off. Although I don't see how somebody can stand you up if they are in the hospital.
