I haven't paid much attention to anything new since yesterday, but is the most likely story still:

Te'o is mentally retarded (or very close to it). Was duped for an extended period of time by a completely irrational and unreasonable hoax. Te'o, upon the passing of this online persona, saw the opportunity to exploit the death of a person he had never met IRL and thus embellished/lied about the extent of the relationship to magnify is own glory. Then, when Te'o learns that he was the "victim" of a hoax, he decides to continue to reference the story of his fake girlfriend's death to garner more attention and sympathy and fails to come clean or correct the record at any point in time.

Alternative perspective on whether T’eo lied in early December.

Many on here are stating as fact that T’eo knew he had been hoaxed as of Dec. 6. Let’s look at why we are saying that. Here’s the quote from the ND press conference:

“Manti called his coaches to inform them that, while he was in attendance at the ESPN awards show in Orlando, he received a phone call from a number he recognized as having been that he associated with Lennay Kekua. When he answered it, it was a person whose voice sounded like the same voice he had talked to, who told him that she was, in fact, not dead. Manti was very unnerved by that, as you might imagine. I will let him again talk about that and his reaction to it. But he maintained that secret vis-a-vis the members of the football family until he called the coaches on the morning of the 26th.”

That awards show was on Dec. 8. So, based on the above, we DO NOT know whether the call he got was from the same number Kekua had always used. We assume that the voice sounded A LOT like what T’eo recognized Kekua’s voice sounded like.

Reasonably, T’eo thought either he was somehow being hoaxed with that call, and his gf really was dead, or he had been hoaxed all along and she never existed. I guess it’s also possible he might have somehow thought she really wasn’t dead and it was really her.

We assume he is really stupid, so maybe he doesn’t know what to think at that point.

Dec. 8 comes, and he says this:
At the Heisman Trophy presentation Dec. 8 in New York, ESPN's Chris Fowler asked Te'o what moment of his very public story of tragedy he would remember.

"I think I'll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away and the first person to run to my aid was my defensive coordinator, Coach [Bob] Diaco, and you know he said something very profound to me," Te'o said. "He said, 'This is where your faith is tested.' Right after that, I ran into the players' lounge and I got on the phone with my parents -- and I opened my eyes and my head coach was sitting right there. And so, you know, there are a hundred-plus people on our team and the defensive coordinator and our head coach took time to just go get one [of those players]. You know I think that was the most meaningful to me."

Here he’s not talking about the girl, but what happened with his coach/team. What he says does not indicate that she was definitively real. It reflect what he felt. He’s entitled to his feelings if he actually thought she was real at that time. I realize that’s a big if, but we are focusing on early December here.

Now he also says this:
During another interview at the Heisman ceremony that ran on WSBT.com, the website for a South Bend TV station, Te'o said: "I mean, I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer. So I've really tried to go to children's hospitals and see, you know, children."

In a column that first ran in The Los Angeles Times, on Dec. 10, Te'o recounted why he played a few days after he found out Kekua died in September, and the day she was supposedly buried.
"She made me promise, when it happened, that I would stay and play," he said Dec. 9 while attending a ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif., for the Lott Impact Awards.

***

Given all of the above, is it not possible that this dummy still thought maybe hs girlfriend had died and somebody was hoaxing him in early December? And that’s why he said he had lost his gf to cancer?

Maybe it took him a few days to figure out what had really happened. I grant you that this assumes he really did have these all night conversations, etc.

You missed the most important part:

quote:

But Vaoso, whose cousin had been duped by Lennay/Tuiasosopo in for a month in 2008, said he was "80 percent" certain that Te'o had known of the hoax at some point before Lennay's "death."

So the guy is a liar.

From Deadspin: LINK

"ESPN's Shelley Smith is reporting that Ronaiah Tuisosopo, the apparent creator of the Lennay Kekua hoax, confessed to duping Manti Te'o, according to an interview with a friend of Tuisasopo. "He told me Manti was not involved at all, he was the victim," the woman told Smith, in an audio recording broadcast on ESPN.

That woman isn't named, but we believe we know who she is. Another one of Smith's sources, a man named J.R. Vaosa, spoke to us for our original story, saying Tuiasosopo had confessed to his best friend. He tried to put us in touch with her, to no avail. Vaosa was one of our two unnamed sources who believed that Tuiasosopo had been in league with Te'o in the deception."

If this kid confuses that he hoaxed Manti all it means is the Te'o family paid him say this or Da Hui threatened to bury him in the pineapple fields on the North Shore

Please don't tell me people are still believing that Teo didn't know about this shite from the beginning?

Just how gullible are people?

Go listen to the interview with Manti's uncle the charity scam started a long time ago.

He ALSO said that his father told him to stay away from Ronaiah, and Manti said he would.

Which has been proven, he didn't.

Thanks for proving our point.

I am not saying i believe anything other than that T'eo is not playing with a full deck.

You have to understand that it is very hard to understand why he would be MOTIVATED to make this crap up or be in on it from the beginning. And we see no evidence of why.

I deal in evidence.

he was in LA while she was in the hospital and didnt try to go see her

So if he is so dumb he fell for all of it he is also a cold hearted shite head who skips out on loved ones when they are really sick in the hospital.

There is no positive way to spin the fact that he never went to see her in the hospital.
