I agree he was at VERY LEAST extremely suspicious. Don't buy that he was doing it for attention anymore, the Ronniah guy had Manti's head spinning a million miles an hour and Manti telling the truth wasn't even an option for him.

He said himself that he didn't find out it was a hoax until Dec 6th. so one would assume that he would have been grieving the loss over the love of his life up until then. So why not visit the grave on Sept 29 when they had a bye, or on Nov 25th after their season ended.

Those kind of details are ones we'll only get when Te'o talks IMO
He might have been misdirected or discouraged by Tuiasospop via Lennay's "family". Teo's was in contact with her fake brother "Koa" and the little girl in the picture with Tuiasosopo.

The SI story is extremely damaging to his story that he found out December 6th.

Manti doesn't benefit from any of this. Its also impossible to spend thousands of hours around a team without anyone finding out that you are sick.

He doesn't now, obviously. He sure captured the hearts of America after his 6 hours of death. No one would have made a big deal if it was just his grandmother.
Again, if you want to look past the stuff about meeting at the Stanford game, or the meetings in Hawaii, fine. But the simple fact that the most popular linebacker in the country was head over heels for a chick he never met face to face is simply unbelievable.
