Notre Dame is circling the wagons on the Manti Te'o not-really-dead-girlfriend hoax ... TMZ has learned the school has instructed staff to keep their mouths shut ... or else. One person connected to the program tells us ... officials have warned staff, if they speak to the media about the scandal without permission from the University, they will "never work for Notre Dame again." The ND athletic director already held a news conference last night, saying the University believes Manti is an innocent victim who was hoaxed by some cyber-bullies for no apparent reason. The initial article published by Deadspin.com suggests Manti may have been involved in concocting the hoax in an effort to gain publicity on a national level. Manti is expected to address the media later today. Stay tuned ...

Wouldn't matter

Clowney gets exposure because he is an absolute beast on the field

Te'o got exposure because he had a sob story and human interest angle, not because he was a great player

I follow HS recruiting and only remembered Te'o's name solely from his HS recruiting, other than that, his three years at ND up until last season was not a national story

Exactly.

His football ability is average and it was blwon up because of this story. Not the other way around.

@YahooForde: Was told late last night by an ND source that Manti Te'o is expected to do a one-on-one interview today with a single TV reporter.

@LeeCourso: Not so fast my friend! My sources tell me the TV reporter will be Te'o's girlfriend.

Which is fine, except for:
quote:
Nov. 28, 2009: Te'o and Kekua meet after Stanford's 45-38 victory over Notre Dame in Palo Alto, according to the South Bend Tribune: "Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te'o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes." Kekua, a Stanford student, swaps phone numbers with Te'o.

Tangled stares and extended hands don't happen online via Twitter profile pics. So someone is full of shite somewhere down the line.

$5. says that entire article in the Trib was written 100% by the ND SID office.

To me the interesting question isn't Te'o himself. It really is plausible for a college kid to be that naive, no matter what we all think things ought to be like. I'm willing to put the entire mystery girl thing in a box, label the box 'weird fricked up shite' and put it away for a while.

Regardless to what extent Te'o himself is tied up in it, or his reasoning, or what was going on at all, the interesting question to me is Notre Dame's part in it. Why did Swarbrick go onstage yesterday completely unprepared, and just babbling obvious bullshite?

It can be assumed that anything ND does as an institution is done for the sole purpose of promoting (or protecting) the institution itself. They'll claim Te'o as a victim, they'll throw him under a bus, they'll tell you with a straight face that he never existed if they think it will make ND look better. So why that disaster of a presser? Why so desperate to try to get control of the situation.

I'm betting that no matter who started this, ND was in it neck deep as soon as possible, pushing it to every media lackey they could find, trying to get their guy the Heisman. And now they're looking at a situation where the media they've cultivated for so long will never look at them again without snickering, and they're scared.

ND, and how they operate, is the really interesting part of this to me. The actual story is kind of a minor point. College kids do inexplicable things sometimes, and we've all been total dumbasses at least once in college. Te'o himself is just another college kid in this. Notre Dame's athletic industry may well come out of this looking at best utterly amoral, and at worst purely evil.

He told ND because others were tweeting about it in December. Another ND player said they figured she was fake. People were talking. He concocted because: A. Last summer he tweeted about going for the Heisman on some Xbox game and even though he was on no one's list, he clearly has a wild imagination. Remember Johnny FairPlay on Survivor faking his grandmothers death to win the sympathy of his fellow contestants? It's certainly plausible he and his HS thought this scheme up for the purpose of drawing attention and sympathy. B. He's gay and his HS buddy is in on it (possibly ver in on it) and the HS friend asked the chick for the twitter pic and they concocted this Jan Brady story to hide the fact that he's never had a girlfriend. C. Both of the above. His continued references to her, his lies about her family helping him get brought this, his dad saying she visited them in Hawaii, him staying on the phone with her every night, his reference to her letter one month after she died, all point to his active roll (yeah he was the top) in this scheme.

And then, in December, when he saw people were sniffing around and getting close to the truth, he decided to get out in front of it and issue a statement saying he'd been duped.

Absolutely plausible explanation of what went down.

This ND article says he did chicks. So he wasn't gay. He's just a scumbag. LINK

quote:

Yet, even before the Michigan State game, Manti Te’o was being questioned by his teammates. Apparently Manti had only “seen” Lennay once — but I assume “seen” was a rather loose term used for “chatted with online” (however, this is extremely complicated to understand since they were reportedly talking since 2009, according to the Te’o family). The debate among teammates wasn’t whether or not Manti actually knew this girl — it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn’t think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti’s girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame). They recognized what was going on for what it was — a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te’o's Heisman campaign. In fact, many of the players privately commented that they didn’t want the students to wear leis in support of Manti and wouldn’t participate themselves — they cited that the team never responded so publicly to tragic events for other players. But there was also the feeling that Manti didn’t deserve to benefit from publicity from the death of somebody he barely knew.

January 16th is not December. Te'O didn't get out in front of anything.

It's funny that people are shocked he had a close personal relationship with someone he has never met or even seen and then dedicated games to her. At least half of all college and pro athletes do this on the regular. They are all just as crazy an Monti!

They don't perpetrate those people as the love of their life that died tragically.
