That's how Stanford fires people.

I’ll always remember him as a really good coach.

Three PAC-12 titles (2012, 2013, 2015).

As an alum he undoubtedly agreed change was needed

65-40 in conference play is stout

Shaw had a helluva run. Unless Stanford gets serious about the NIL world, I don't see anyone coming close to his success.

Their alums largely don't care about athletics. Shaw really did well from the post-Harbaugh flashy, but he is a true grind and defense type, so his resources dried up while still having academic standard requirements (obviously x number of waivers). Never heard anything negative about him, and seemed like he did things the right way, so congrats on the retirement

In the long run he should be remembered very fondly by alumni. When they were riding high and people were talking about him getting hired away to bigger jobs, I never saw it that way. I always saw him as someone who loved coaching at his alma mater and had no ambitions beyond that. That was good for Stanford. And good coaches getting stale after 10 years or so is more the rule than the exception, so this ending shouldn't taint his legacy.

I wonder how much of the collapse is on him versus any coach trying to win at Stanford?

I assume he'll take an admin job at Stanford.

He was a worthy adversary. Wish him all the best.

It did. Which is a weird thing for a guy that young.

But being the winningest coach at your alma mater is a heck of an accomplishment to hang a career on (if he does decide he’s done coaching).

They win the the director's cup every year. I would say they care about athletics. They don't care about football.

Stanford is the last place to bag on for athletics.

Tons of competitive programs.
No scandals.
Ivy level academics.

They are closer to what college athletics are supposed to be than anyone else in P5.

He had an excellent run even though the last few years were stale. Good for him to retire or step away. Honestly, he was pretty good on TV for NFL draft coverage. Wouldn't be a bad option if he chose that
