Batting order today is close to the best we may get, at least early in the season.

Jose
Ted
Slimfast Alex
Yed
Yuli
Uncle Mike
Chas
tFranchise
Shitty Catcher

I don't fancy Yordan playing LF and making sliding catches in foul territory during ST.

As long as Ted isn't hitting 6th and 7th anymore. Ted and Yed LLC are the new cornerstones of the offense. They need to be in the middle of the order.

At least until Crane and Cluck LLC find excuses not to pay them.

5 years $376,000. Not a second or penny longer.

I don't really want to call Crane cheap because he's paid high salaries in the short term and paid out on more bargain extensions like Altuve and Bregman. But the apparent company policy of contracts no longer than 5 years and xx dollars means were never going to keep guys like Yed and Ted unless they sign below market extensions before FA like Bregs and Altuve did.

I think there’s a possibility they do, especially Yordan, considering he’s a DH and has an injury history. I don’t think Crane is cheap necessarily, he just has hard lines in the sand on things like long term contracts like you referenced that he won’t cross

If we are in contention in July and there’s a high salaried player with a few years left on his deal that fits for us in a trade, I fully expect him to be okay with pursuing that player.

I’m fine being smart with your money and not signing or keeping big-ticket free agents if you have other options that can emerge and match production or come close.

But if that’s your philosophy, you better damn well nail the free agents you do sign. Pedro Baez has yet to do shite in a year and going into year 2, his velocity isn’t what it was when he was with the Dodgers. Waste $12.5 million over 2 years on a reliever, especially when relievers are the potentially most volatile commodity from year to year.

I’ll eat crow if this guy eventually pans out this year but it’s not looking good.

Baez is a sunk cost at this point. I’ll be surprised if he’s still on the roster in July. I wish we had just cut him loose and signed another relief arm.

Click has been a very mixed bag to this point but I do think he did pretty well reloading bullpen at the deadline last year. I like a lot of the draft picks he’s made under some tough circumstances but it’s too early to tell on that. Free agency has left much to be desired.

No problem with what he did last year at the deadline. And $6 million a year isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of payroll. But just irks me to waste that much on a reliever who has and probably will been a bust.

He should be released

It's not even questionable at this point

Yep, Baez got lit up again today. He needs to accept going on the IL to try to figure out if the velo is retrievable or he needs to retire.

I just lol’d while doing some research for my fantasy draft tonight. Guy had a “sleepers” article and I came across this gem

quote:

Niko Goodrum, SS, Astros: I don’t see myself drafting Goodrum for 12-team leagues, but I already have him in three leagues, including the 15-team NERF (New England Roto Fantasy) League. With shortstop being so deep, there is no reason to reach for Goodrum until the late rounds, even in deeper leagues, but as a late-round target, he is being overlooked (665 NFBC ADP). The Astros were a great landing spot for Goodrum, and not only because their lineup offers opportunities to produce runs. As of this writing, their shortstop and center field situations are unsettled, and Goodrum has a chance to start at both positions. The move from Comerica Park to Minute Maid Park also provides an enormous upgrade in park factor for home runs from both sides. While there is no reason to expect Goodrum to exceed his career .230 batting average in 2022, his potential to register a 15-15 season should leapfrog him over several shortstop-eligible players going before him, such as Elvis Andrus, Paul DeJong and Ha-Seong Kim. If you think 15 homers is too optimistic of an expectation, bear in mind that Goodrum hit 27 of his 42 home runs as a Tiger away from Comerica Park

Tucker with a .227 spring. He's been a slow starter to this point. Pretty much face planted through April last season.

IIRC, he hit plenty of missiles right at them.

He had almost a negative BABIP

I was concerned b/c I figured the law of averages would play out and he missed his best chances for hits

But he just kept hitting the ball squarely and finally found holes
