Regardless of what the Astros decide, I’m confident Jim Crane will end up with a great GM. People I trust tell me it’s between Dana Brown and Brad Ausmus, the former unofficial Astros captain.

There would be a unique juxtaposition that after 6 straight ALCS, 4 world series and 2 titles, a set of iconic players from an era known for not being able to win in the playoffs stage a coup to reshape the club in their image.

How have we gone from pioneers to now possibly being run by Brad Ausmus and Dusty Baker?

Someone needs to check on Crane. He's not well.

Can confirm that the Astros have spoken to Guardians AGM James Harris about their vacant GM job, as @JonHeyman said

There aren't any black GMs in MLB. Crane has talked to at least 3 black candidates.

Trying to learn something about Harris. He's got an interesting background and a wholly non traditional route for how he got to this point.

He never played baseball, never coached baseball. He was a football guy. Walked on at Nebraska and ended up being their Director of sports nutrition. Chip Kelly hired him in the same role at Oregon and later elevated him to Assistant AD: Chief of Staff. Kelly then brought him to Philadelphia when he went to the Eagles as Chief of Staff where he still did science/nutrition stuff and his program was somewhat innovative with regard to biometric analysis, sleep studies, urine analysis. But he also handled administrative things like scheduling, helping players with off the field issues etc. Kelly called him something of a liason to the weight room, nutrition room and everything that goes on on the first floor.

Baseball enters the picture when some Pirates people came to Eagles camp and wanted to learn more about the biometric analysis. When Kelly was fired, the Pirates hired Harris where he spent a year before the Indians hired him as farm director. He's since risen to VP of Player Development and to assistant GM last year.

I like it. Biometric stuff is the current frontier when it comes to player development/analytics. I wonder how much impact that stuff has on Cleveland’s pitching development because all they do is shite out solid starters similar to how we’ve been doing

Every pro sports team should be looking into these things.

Interesting guy. Non traditional baseball background but his career trajectory makes it seem like he makes a quick impression and he's a fast riser.
