Sounds like an effort at Dusty proofing a game plan

"Hey coach, I saw we are having to scratch Altuve and play Dubon at second base. I recommend someone other than Dubon lead off. Literally anyone else in the lineup. It could even be Maldy."

Great day to be at World Champion HQ. Actually saw the big man Crane walk by as I was leaving the team store.

I guess we're going to soon accept that Brantley is coming back.

Crane wants to keep those contacts short for the 2025 sale.

Where’s that Schwab guy so we can ask him about how Crane was unhappy that we never made any big deals?

The whole model relies on at least a few key players signing prearb under market extensions and hitting on prospects to replace the ones who don't.

Let Cole walk, Framber turned into an ace and along came Javi and Garcia

Let Correa walk, Pena is a gold glove and double playoff MVP.

To this point its worked. But this 4 year max means we're never going to be players for any noteworthy free agents. Seems like we're going to be in for another rebuild if Tucker, Pena, Javi, Framber etc don't take undermarket extensions.

Yep. And it doesn’t bode well on that front that the examples they have to follow include Judge and Correa who bet on themselves and won bigly.

By the same logic, Crane bet on his strategy and he keeps winning. But it does feel like you can't keep placing the same bet. Just by the odds of baseball were going to go bust on some prospects, more stars are going to walk away.

Were at a point in the game where the best players are getting 9, 11. 13 year contracts so you have to consider what that does to the downstream market. Crane capping FA deals at 4 years is seemingly more and more out of line with what the market is at.

4 is too short. 13 is too long.

There’s not 1 of those long term deals that will age well

It’s not my money, so spending recklessly is only determined by the rules that govern competitive balance across the league.

I expect a backlash is coming from a majority of owners that will reinforce penalties for overspending, and the contracts themselves will be a flock of albatross that kill the playoff hopes of contenders perennially.

One thing that won’t change is that owners will be owners. They are hopefully too smart to kill what separates their league from NBA-like, player driven, free agent championships.

Red Sox have designated Eric Hosmer for assignment.

I wonder if Bargain Bin Jim might be interested in him as a cheap platoon 1B/DH left-handed bat.
