How do folks feel about a Max Scherzer trade with Pena, Lee and Freudis Nova going to the nats?

I like it other than Lee, depends on what we’ll be paying I suppose

If we don't know that part, we can't begin to construct a trade.

Lee should be untouchable for any of the players currently rumored on the market IMO

I saw this earlier

LINK

He could be a nice CF option if they really are open to dealing him now

Agreed, would definitely prefer to not give away Lee. The last front office seemed to do a pretty good holding on to the ones the coveted, so we’ll see how this one does.

Only real “misses” we had with prospect trades or holds seems to have been Hader & Whitley, the rest have had middling success, if any at all

The problem is he hasn’t played CF a ton and he’s on the older side. So who knows how good he really is there defensively. Controllable through 2023. He would be much cheaper in a trade than a Bryan Reynolds I think but more expensive than a Starling Marte for sure

Honestly, I don’t want to burn any trade capital on position players while the bullpen is a shining beacon of arse.

Yeah I’m skeptical we will do anything in CF unless it falls in our lap. I’m fine with that. I’d much rather get two competent bullpen arms than a CF and one bullpen arm for sure

Even with Maldy's battle agains the Mendoza line and a host of other bums taking up lineup space this is the best offense in baseball.

Relief pitching is where the need lies. Er, the needs lie.

As my old coach once said, "shite, someone has to make the outs".

(Unfortunately, he was probably referring to me most of the time he said it."

Oh I see, this was Dan Szymborski's idea.

How does he write such a thing and not mention the money? Strange.

He does but the value of the prospects the other team gets is directly proportional to the money involved. I'm not trading the best catching prospect we've had in decades (maybe ever?) plus a potential starting shortstop AND a sell low prospect with great talent for a rental where I'm also going to be a repeat tax offender.

Because we will then have 3 good relievers instead of 1. And good health is far from a guarantee

A Scherzer trade is more involved than just picking up some salary for the next few months until he's a free agent. His contract with the Nats was loaded with deferred money to the point that he's due $105 million over the next 7 years plus he's owed a $7.5 million bonus payable in September. On top of all that, he's said to be demanding an extension as a condition of waiving his no trade rights.

If the Nats pick up more of the remaining money, we've got to give them a huge prospect package (think Lee and Leon) or the Astros take on a bunch of money

Prorate that between time spent with the Nationals (6-2/3 seasons) and time spent with the new team, 1/3 of a season. Seems easy enough.

Prorate that as well.

Yep.

Money has WAR value. Big leaguers have WAR value with projected future value as well. Prospects have projected WAR value. All three matter in constructing a reasonable trade. A trade for Max would be quite complicated.
