For each organization, we identify the 10 prospects with the highest ceilings, with consideration given to the likelihood of reaching those ceilings. To qualify as a prospect, a position player cannot exceed 130 big league at-bats, while a pitcher cannot exceed 50 innings or 30 relief appearances. These thresholds mirror major league rookie qualifications, albeit without regard for major league service time.
Notable Graduations: 1B Yuli Gurriel (8) and OF Derek Fisher (9)

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Strengths: Even after graduating righthanders Francis Martes and (the now-traded) Joe Musgrove and trading away righty Franklin Perez, the Astros still have a number of high-ceiling pitching prospects, led by the precocious Forrest Whitley--a potential front-of-the-rotation starter. Houston has plenty of versatility as well. Righties J.B. Bukauskas, Hector Perez, Jorge Alcala and David Paulino, who all rank inside the top 10, all could be starters or relievers.
Weaknesses: The Astros came into 2017 with a healthy surplus of outfielders throughout the upper levels of the system. After trading away Teoscar Hernandez, Daz Cameron, Preston Tucker, Jason Martin, and Ramon Laureano and graduating Derek Fisher, Houston has Kyle Tucker--but not nearly as many solid bats with defensive versatility at the upper levels.

We just keep unearthing and developing high ceiling Latin kids. That’s why I’m not concerned about possibly trading prospects, or this “window”. I think Nova is going to be s really big name by the end of this year

I have a feeling now that Tucker and Whitley are becoming too mainstream, Myles Straw will be very much in the thick of things for future DAT crownings

He’s a really interesting player. I dunno if he’s gonna be good but the profile he has is very unique
He picks up the slightest amount of power without sacrificing much contact and they might really have something

Strike zone disciple, very good speed, and great defense will always find you a place on a roster even if it’s as a backup. Especially in the postseason
If we could get us a catcher of the future that sure would be nice. Anybody have a clue how Jacob Nottingham has progressed?

Also is the AJ Reed hype train officially dead?

Deader than a door nail. Yuli is keeping first base warm for a year or two more until Alvarez arrives. And then when he fails like every other top 1B prospect we have, we hype the next guy in the minors.

Nottingham was the Brewers 14th rated prospect last season.
2017 he hit just above the Mendoza line at AA.

14) Jacob Nottingham, C-1B, Grade C+: Age 21, hit .234/.295/.347 with 11 homers, 29 walks, 138 strikeouts in 415 at-bats in Double-A; I thought he was one of the top catching prospects in baseball a year ago but ’16 was quite poor; strike zone got away from him, Southern League pitchers exploiting his tendency to chase; has the physical tools to catch but remains raw, gave up 21 passed balls and made 15 errors, both rates much too high; too young and physically talented to write off but obviously has a lot of work to do. ETA 2019.

We have ordered the jewels for the Rogelio Armenteros crown. It will be a shiny one.

Luhnow’s next diamond in the rough?

Bargain shopping again, sad. We’ll never win with acquisitions like this.

Any of you guys think we sign another C for depth, or do you think we roll with McCann, Gattis, and Stassi next year? With Gattis likely being DH, I'm not sure if they're content with McCann/Stassi for 162 games, or do they sign another to back them up.

I saw in an article or chat the other day someone asking who some pillow contract candidates would be with how slow the market is, and Lucroy was mentioned as a possibility. I would love to get Lucroy on a one year deal where he can split catching duties with McCann.
Beyond him I dunno, but I would rather have a veteran catcher on a relatively cheap deal than roll with Stassi. Wellington Castillo, Nick Hundley or Rene Rivera are guys that could fill that possibly. Looking at it though it appears all those guys have signed so nvm

I think I agree. I'm fine if they sign Luccroy to like a one year deal too. I think he did pretty well after he was traded to the Rockies last year.

I think the worry with him from a lot of teams is that it was in Colorado. I’m sure a one year deal with him would be expensive for that year but it would be a nice upgrade over Stassi for that season. And with how cheap the core of the team is it’s the type of thing they could consider.

OT news. Georgie got married over the weekend and quite the contingent of Stros bros showed up.
AJ, Gregs, Trill Harris, Jake, Fiers, Jabroni, Peacock, Sipp and I think that's Windmill behind Fiers

Thoughts...
Bosher: He's a potential LOOGY with an option remaining. Worst case, somebody needs to throw left-handed out of the Fresno pen.
Lucroy: Declining on offense and defense in a contract year was a bold strategy, Cotton.
Wedding pic: Fiers probably thinks the movie Wedding Crashers is a documentary.

Ashur Tolliver and Jordan Jankowski get World Series rings.
At the very least, there's bumps in the season where AAA filler needs to make an appearance. That may be Boshers.
