watching the highlights again this morning, damn what a game

I’m so proud of Mancini and Chaz for not letting their failures at the plate lead to failures in the field.

This team isn’t perfect, has a ton of dudes struggling, he an idiot for a manager, and yet continues to grind away and win games with Vets, Rookies, bench players all contributing and the pitching staff going HAM

I 100% agree with this.

No, my litmus test isn't "must be hall of famer" -- that's specifically why I included Hader.

As I said, my litmus test is really:
quote:

All I was trying to say is, that's the elite level I want from the closer. "Game over".

Way more consistent that most is not how I define "elite closer". I am not unhappy at the least he is our closer - quite the opposite actually. And yes, he is the best guy for the job that we have. (Until LMJ finally realizes his career will be best suited as a closer.)

He's been an Astro for half of 2018, the COVID bullshite 2020 season, and 3 full seasons in 2019, 2021, and 2022.

So basically 4 full seasons worth of results.

211 IP
76 SV (wasn't the closer at first, Osuna TYFYS.)

2.39 ERA
0.93 WHIP
2.28 FIP
11.9 K/9
180 ERA+

You won't find but a few guys with better numbers over that stretch.

Hader has a higher ERA and FIP and a 149 ERA+ from 2018-now. Jansen has a 3.08 ERA, 1.045 WHIP, and a 133 ERA+ over that span. Diaz has a 2.88 ERA, 1.023 WHIP, and a 141 ERA+ over that span.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe you won't find any guys with better numbers.

Clase is better, 1.47 ERA, .881 WHIP, 288 ERA+, but he didn't pitch in 2018 or 2020.

ETA: I might be forgetting someone... I checked Kimbrel and he is way worse recently.

It’s VERY rare for a guy to dominate over multiple years

Diaz wasn’t great for like 2 years, then this year he was lights out

I forgot Liam Hendricks.

2.43 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 175 ERA+ from 2018 to now. He wasn't a closer in 2018 though which was his worst year of that bunch. From 2019 to now he's been a little better than Pressly, with a 2.26 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and a 188 ERA+

His career numbers are a damn rollercoaster.

2016: 2.79 ERA, strong rookie season, 5th place ROY votes.
2017: 3.27 ERA, falling back to an average reliever.
2018: 1.96 ERA, 57 saves, best closer in the game, gets traded to the Mets.
2019: 5.59 ERA, one of the worst closers in the game.
2020: 1.75 ERA, although a smaller sample size.
2021: 3.45 ERA, back to being average.
2022: 1.31 ERA, a ridiculous 17.1 K/9, back to the best RP in the game.

And now he's going to be a free agent. Are you good with that up and down?

Well yeah Pressly isn’t a hall of famer like Rivera or Wagner. If that’s your bar you’re going to be disappointed in almost every case. He’s a top 5 closer in MLB though and way more consistent than most. He’s been excellent for most of this season as well

I agree. I don't think there are many closers that giving people a great feeling. I was fine with the Harper HBP. I felt like the objective was to not throw anything too close and hope he'd chase. Walk him if you must, but don't give him anything to hit.

Other than the game that earned him a bag o' dicks, he has been great. Abreu makes me much more nervous than Pressly.

And every single player interviewed talks about it being a TEAM effort. These guys 100% buy into the team approach and pick each other up.

He hasn't been great in a couple of years. And I'm sorry...I would just never be able to really like a guy that looks like he's going to fly away before he pitches. Just too weird. I feel the same about Marsh. I'd never be able to cheer for a guy that washes his hair once a month.

Has anyone besides me noticed (and been pissed off by this) that people are talking about how many innings there have been so few hits by the Phillies? They talk about the Phillies not getting hits, etc...

But the entire reason for this is that the Astros pitching is so damn good! You hear some about Astros pitching and obviously during the no no, but just overall...Astro pitching is the reason for so few hits. Those guys are aggressive hitters and I love their approach at the plate. But they just haven't been able to hit our pitching for the most part.

Top to bottom, this is the pitching staff that we all thought we had in 2004 - 2005.

Yeah the broadcast has been frustrating. It took them until well into the 7th two nights ago to really start acknowledging the significance of what was happening. And last night the last two innings were all about “getting Harper to the plate.”

I like John Smoltz. His breakdowns in pitching and at bats are really great. But this has really been difficult to watch.

Phillies left 12 on base... they had ample opportunities, just only finished 1-7 with runners in scoring position.

It truly is sad how the MLB and the disreputable baseball media spent the last 5 years leaning into the "cheating" story and instead they're missing out on promoting the greatness of this Astros run. They could have added a massive population base to the MLB target market by promoting the Astros across the south. What did we get in place of that? More pandering to the petulant children on the coasts from the coastal writers who obsess over :purity".

Jose Altuve should be one of the easiest sells in baseball, everything about the guy is marketable and his story is inspiring and the idiot MLB can barely sell him worth a shite. We hear more about trashcans than Altuve's place as an unlikely MLB superstar.

We’ll done sir. 100% my thoughts as well.

I have never agreed more with a post in my history of TD and the DAT.

100% faith in him. If Astros lose it won't be because he chokes.

A right proper Frambering to finish this season would just be :chefs kiss:
