Joe West spoke to pool reporter
@dfbarron
“They hit the ball to right field, he (Betts) jumped up to try to make a catch, a fan interfered with him over the playing field. That is why I called spectator interference.”
Asked if it was a clear call in his mind, West said, “Yes.”
This guy
1) He's got no fricking clue if the fans were over the playing field from where he was standing
2) It was so clear to him that he initially called it a double

Could have been. Could have been a home run. Could have been an out. Really strange convergence of events right at the border of the field of play and stands without a definitive camera angle.
Sox were fortunate they called it an out, but I don't think it was clearly wrong.

It’s unfortunate for the Astros but the word plainly gives West wiggle room. If the rule was writing more black and white an out call would be more egregious. Though I don’t know how that rule would or should be written more clear. I’m no lawyer.

Ypu have to hand it to old joe west getting back to the wall so quickly and viewing that angle like that so definitively. Are we really buying that?
This from a guy who can’t even make a move to get out of the way on a wild throw from the catcher to second base. Yeah right, unless he was positioned at the wall and or already looking back towards the wall there’s no way he has the reflexes to see that play clearly. He needs to retire ASAP.

At this point, the Astros have got to do something about that first row in right field. I think this is the 4th time this year we've gotten dicked by fan interference in that exact spot. People are too damn stupid not to stick their arms out. The team is going to have to put in some kind of barrier where those idiots aren't able to lean so close over the field

Nothing sure about making those kinds of catches. Look at Springer's deflected drop from earlier...almost the exact same kind of motion and leap but he was inside the wall not outside of it. It's bizarre that in baseball when there's ambiguity it usually favors the offense (e.g. tie goes to the runner") but in this case there was ambiguity and it penalized the Astros. All of sports needs some kind of new umpire/referee gesture that means "Play on, I don't know what the frick happened" and then it requires instant replay to make a decision. I'd rather the guys reviewing instant replay actually make a decision than hide behind "not enough evidence to overturn it" which is bullshite.

Mookies glove wasn't even over the wall..

Well, nothing can be done now.
The only question that remains is who is going to guide us to 3 wins in a row? Desperate times call for desperate measures. I know the DAT win/loss records might favor someone else but I vote that Ryno starts tomorrow’s DAT.

Or put up signs on the side of the wall facing the fans. I agree though, they're like a dog chasing a car once that ball starts to come down towards them. It's like they forget there's a serious professional baseball game with high stakes going on.

That transcript can't be correct. It doesn't have the {heavy breathing} that surely was part of the interview. Serious question, are umpires required to pass vision tests? That fat frick probably has floaters out the wazoo.

Mookies arm never crossed the wall Joe says

To me the guy with the rolled up white long sleeved shirt messed it up. Despite the fact he is nowhere near the play, he is holding onto the railing giving the impression the others are also leaning over the wall.

I think the goober with his hand stretched to the side tells the story. His left hand is on the wall and his left shoulder is directly above it, therefore his right shoulder is behind the wall and right hand stretched sideways reaches directly above the wall at best, maybe a touch behind it. The ball hits the other fans hands definitively behind said goobers right hand thus behind the wall which of course is out of play.

That was incredibly well played game between two immensely talented teams. I just wish the third team on the field was as talented.
Todd Kalas coming in hot.

Cry all you want, but giving up 8 runs in a postseason game usually doesn’t net you a win. There were eight more innings to win that game, it happened early. You have to move on with it. The call gets made, and the call is the call.

Stros paying for their fun house park design.

Yeah. The call is the call and changed the dynamic of the game very early on. Turns out, it’s the difference in the ballgame.
Love the way people act like it was an irrelevant part of the outcome

I feel bad for the stros man. Pulling for them, but I still can't decide whether that's interference or not. Some angles make it appear like they're basically meeting right at the plane of the fence. Can't tell if Mookie is over the wall since his body is not yet touching it or anything. Can't tell if the fans are in the field of play either.
Just a shitty deal altogether.

That's my read of the situation. That being said, who the hell designed that park so it's an actual issue?
