re: Could one get away with cheating on baseball stats in HS?

HS baseball stats are very unregulated.
Most times it’s a trainer or Bench player keeping them in the dugout. Some schools use an iPad; but it’s still someone watching and inputting manually.
A lot of time subs aren’t recorded; I.e. the original player gets the stats after a sub comes in.
Other times a batter is skipped and the stats get all skewed 1 off. They forget to change pitchers; especially at inning changes. Never corrected.
I’ve never thought it was a big deal; Varsity Coaches know who they’re gonna call up without looking at Stat sheets.

Remember the Calvary Baptist QB that was Mr. Football? This is pretty much what happened

One of the guys who kept our stats (manually in a stat book) in HS HATED one of our starters. If the player he hated hit it anywhere near an opposing player he would record it as an error no matter what when he was score keeper.
Our coach just signed off at the end of games because he was a chode who only cared about wins/losses. I bet he stole 20 or 25 hits from that kid by the end of the season

Used to be a guy who played for Parkway (Bossier) and every time he walked his average went up.

All that stuff was manual and on paper but before stats were finalized, the refs and both teams signed off on it. That was for varsity.
They may sign off but they don’t audit it. No way they can remember every intricacy.

Think of it as the official scorer calling a hit an error, but later on the HS coaches change it in their book to a hit. It happens in college sometimes as well, that the staff will modify items such as errors to hits in the official book. I think even MLB will change official scoring weeks later for some odd reason.
SD@NYM
A run scored by Eduardo Escobar was changed to unearned against Blake Snell in the bottom of the 6th inning

Each high school team has a person keep the teams official book. After a game, the two stats folks often get together and discuss errors vs.hits...basic stuff and then go home. Many of these folks make lots of mistakes. Hits vs. error judgement calls impact batting averages, pitcher's stats including ERA, fielding stats, etc. There are inaccurate official stats all over the place in high school.
At all-district meetings, you'll hear coaches claim the somebody hit .400 in district games, yet all the other coaches have stats from their games involving that player which adds up to a far lower average.
Home team statisticians or coaches call box scores in to the newspaper and they aren't always right. One time my son at the plate reached on an obvious error and with a walk, and grounded out. This is an 0-2 hitting line, but the newspaper heard from the home team that he was 2-3 and published it.

Daddy ball is just as prevalent in high school as it is anywhere else.

It happens in all high school sports and small college sports too

Think that would be 0-1… you don’t count errors as an at bat

Not sure what the point would be but I do know a lot of schools report their stats to the papers so that part would be possible. Obviously the bigger teams that get more attention wouldn’t get away with that

Our HS head coach had a dad of a player keep the book in the stands. That guy would call in the stats to the local newspaper sports line after the games. And, he also gave the game summary to the sports line as well.
Yes, padding happened at times.
