Looks like Toronto was up for 2012 and lost to London, they didn't re-bid for 2016.

The 4 finalist to be chosen in 2009 are: Madrid, Toyko, Chicago and Rio (LA was 2nd to Chicago in the USOC selection). Right now the favorites are Madrid and Toyko apparently. If they went with Madrid, that'd be 3 of 4 for Europe.

I know they really wanted to put one if Africa, but I've heard So. Africa has had trouble getting ready for the 2010 World Cup, so we'll see what happens there.

Yeah, I heard that's going to be mandatory for the next sporting event in Vegas after the NBA ASG.

I think N.O. will host one before anyplace in Africa/Middle East does.

Oh i forgot about them Dubai is no where near 3rd world. I think they would be the only place (beside Rio, Tokyo and Sydney) that could beat out Beijing.

I don't think Rio will get it. They're likely to have the 2014 World Cup. I don't think the IOC would follow up a World Cup with a Summer Olympiad.

Rio is an awesome city, but is way too violent for an Olympics. My cabbie there was running red lights at night because he was afraid to stop for fear of violence.

When you have favelas-- slums-- that are bigger than the city of NO in terms of population, you are already in trouble.

I would think that Sau Paulo or Buenos Aries would be better choices personally.

NolaCajun,

NO already has venues for two events.

Whitewater events could be held at the pumping stations, and shooting events could be held in Magnolia. There even might be some gold medal winners there right now that are undiscovered!

I think Seattle and Chicago have the best chance of American cities to host a Summer games.

I really think New Orleans could do it. We're the greatest event city in the United States no matter what the haters say.

We already have 4 to 5 venues within 15 miles - the Superdome, NO Arena, Zephyr Field, Saints training facility, and Tad Gormley. We also have UNO which would obviously need huge renovations but would be the logical place for the swimming and tennis events. The Saints could easily train in Jackson for an extra 2 weeks for the biggest event in the world.

It's not as far-fetched as some of you guys think. I agree that the major problem right now is our local leadership. If Mitch Landrieu had been elected mayor it wouldn't seem as ridiculous as it does now.

It's easy to be negative. For example, most "rational" people believed that New Orleans had absolutely no shot of getting an NBA franchise.

Most people believed that New Orleans had absolutely no shot of saving the Saints or Hornets post-Katrina. Yet here they both are, arguably in better shape than ever before.

You should not underestimate New Orleans. The number of cities in America who could do a better job of hosting huge events can be counted on one hand.

I think he means the Summer, not Special Olympics. The only viable Olympic venue there is the NOA, The Dome is closed stadium the Olympics require and open air stadium for track and field.

The problems in NOLA gov't extend much further than 1 elected official.

New Orleans hosts events like Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Super Bowls, Final Fours, NBA All-Star games, huge corporate conventions, etc. that go on without any problems yet people discount the fact that it is one of the best event cities in the country.

The Olympics would be put on by the Federal government anyway so having shitty politicians doesn't mean much. (think Atlanta could have hosted the Olympics alone?)

The only thing I see in the way is the lack of facilities that could be used for the Olympics.

I didn't know that an open air stadium was required. Unless Tiger Stadium was used it's an impossibility.

not that I'm agreeing, but they did use Tad Gorm for Olympic trials in '96 or 2000, I think, would need a major facelift for Olympics.

I love New Orleans as much as anyone and it is a great city for hosting events but there is no way they will host the Olympics. Hosting one football game is much different than hosting events in a bunch of sports. They don't have the space, facilities, or government to do it. New Orleans isn't even the biggest city in the state.
