Harper is a phenom and has been on the radar for ages due to a lot of mythology about him hitting 500 foot homeruns when he was 2.5 years old.

Really though, he has a ton of ability. He lit up A ball, struggled a little in AA, but not much of a sample to make any sweeping judgments.

Should be fun to watch him this spring and see how he fares against big league arms.

I dunno, I kinda think Bryce Harper reminds me of Pete Weber. I know it's a different sport and they are nothing alike, but just something about Harper reminds me of the great PDW

Hey, I pointed out Harper's numbers are pretty close to Beltre's and was told I couldn't compare the two because... well, just because, honestly. There was no reason other than he wasn't A-Rod, the other guy he gets compared to.

Harper is the fourth Greatest Prospect Ever we've had in four years. Let's just slow down the hype train a bit. He's a fabulous prospect. Not all fabulous prospects become fabulous players. Just ask Gregg Jeffries.

Yeah, it wasn't intended as a cut and dry comparison of their skill sets.

Like you said, not every star prospect turns into a superstar. The thread was more for fun than anything, to both reminisce on Inky and discuss Harper's lofty power expectations and the potential that he turn into something similar.

But of course, I know nothing about baseball. Its hard to watch baseball when you live in your mom's basement and crunch numbers all day.

That would be quite a feat.

he's lived up to the hype thus far, so i dont see how i could have used that at all

I'll take great hitting prospects all day infront of great pitching prospects.

a lot of butthurt up in this thread.

It wasnt the comparison, it was more along the lines of saying "having a MLB career like Beltre wouldn't be disappointing".

Yeah, Davey wants him up, so I imagine he's gonna play him every chance he gets.

and even he wasnt BA's #1 guy. and it seems to me that to be one of the best prospects ever, youd have to be #1 on their list at some pt

just talking about hype here.

from college, to being the #1 pick, tearing up the minors, to backing it up in his rookie year.

similar path Harper has taken.

Were Heyward or Wieters that hyped?

naw.

What about Hamilton?

Didn't read through the entire thread. Just saw "comparisons." Not sure if Hamilton was brought up.

Yes. Baseball Prospectus called Wieters the best prospect ever (and has since called him the greatest bust ever -- veering from one extreme pole to the other). The hype on Wieters was so insane, there was a tongue in cheek website called Matt Wieters Facts which was the same joke as Chuck Norris Facts, only baseball related.

Heyward was also ridiculously hyped as the best prospect since Andruw Jones, who if you recall, was once considered the Greatest Prospect Ever in his own right.

It's not "butthurt", it's disagreeing with you. and you objected to the Beltre comp long before I said it wouldn't be a bad career for Harper (or anyone).
