Jimbo Fisher 2007 at FSU. His offense was as bad as anything Jeff Bowden crayoned. Outside of one magical year he's been arse his whole career as an OC and playcaller

tOSU coordinators:
Ed Wariner (2015 OC…maybe the worst hire of all time)
Kerry Coombs (2020 DC)

He was a coordinator that has done jack shite since moving up to hbc.
What's the criteria?
The man is 96-30 as a head coach. He has had 2 top-5, 4 top-10, and 6 top-15 finishes. 5 of those ended in a New Year's 6 (3) or CFP (2) game.
Is he overhyped as a head coach? Sure.
Is he bad? No one would rationally suggest that.

From coordinator to head coach probably Norm Chow
From position coach to coordinator Sal Sunseri 2012 at Tennessee might be worst all time.

Coordinators who didn’t work out.
80% of winning in football (at any level) is talent acquisition. You can be an X’s and O’s savant as a coordinator, but if you don’t have the charisma and salesmanship to bring in the studs, it’s not going to matter. And if you can reel in the big fish and hire good assistants to do the actual coaching and be a good enough leader to keep the car on the road, then you can get away with being unremarkable on the technical side.
At the end of the day, being a coordinator and head coach at the college level are two very different things. It’s hard to predict what you’re getting when a coordinator sits in the big chair. But if I were an AD hiring, my first inquiry would be how good of a recruiter Coach X might be. If he’s just some Rainman who knows ball from A-Z but has the personality of a cardboard box, it’s not going to work.

I mean, most coaches don’t work out. A list of coordinators that did work out would be shorter.
