People who dislike modern college football are in the minority

ESPN’s Nielsen-rated networks airing college football – ABC, ESPN and ESPNU – averaged 3.1 million viewers in Week 1, up 44 percent over 2023 and the largest audience for Kickoff Week across ESPN platforms since 2016.

Keep things in perspective

There are 330 million Americans

What that means is that if you go walk down sunset blvd or broadway or bourbon street or walk the wharfs of Boston, etc, only 1/100 you talk to will have watched cfb on sat

The full effect and reality of what’s happening hasn’t taken place yet, it’s going to take a little time.

Most people are hate watching A&M anyways, once they hit rock bottom this season and people get bored with the cult train wreck raitings will plummet just from that alone.

No, they're not.

Anyone that buys viewership numbers is naive. Every year they try to sell us that the numbers go up by large amounts. They've been doing this since 2020, yet when you read up on the data you'll see that they started looking at viewership outside the home, and DVR, and streaming. So, either they are changing the way they sample or they are simply casting a larger net.

Then we get explainers trying to tell us that the average viewership in the average minute is somehow lower than the average of those that watch a longer period of the game.

Average minute includes short-term plus long-term viewers and that doesn't add up to a bigger total than long-term viewers? That can only happen if they partition out the short-term viewers, but if that's the case, why do they use the average minute to report the rating? That would be a false metric and base viewers on people that are channel surfing.

Anyone that thinks TV ratings and viewership provides reliable numbers is a data-tard. We have digital cable boxes now - any reporting that does not give you raw and frequency metrics in bins of minutes watched (or bins of percent of total game time), should be disregarded. This should be further stratified by quarter and/or by clock hour. The number of partitions and strata that can be created here is enormous. We're being lied to.

This data is readily available. All of your cable activity is being monitored by the cable box and other locations. You no longer get a dump of product through the cable, where you select a part of it at your channel selector. You are selecting it and it's being monitored by the cable box and that data goes back to the cable company.

Anyone that doesn't think this data is available in more robust form should go look at how YouTube delivers data to content creators, and the data you can find yourself on videos. They know viewership of every second. Cable TV is no different now. We live in a world where everything is captured and analyzed. Not only are they capturing all of your data, they are selling it and monetizing it, so there is no counter here that argues it's too expensive for such robust capture to take place.

But you’re also not accounting for people streaming. So these numbers are lower than actual.

This thread isn’t about total viewership of the population.

Go back and maybe read the op again.

You made a gotcha that has nothing to do with the topic
