The sport and the Rose Bowl haven’t been the same since he retired.

College football was much much better when it was a regional sport. It meant more. Back before the playoffs and BCS and back before ESPN decided it wanted to run college football.

It was a touching moment when he came out the closet during the USC/Texas title game by saying “let’s play football… YIPEEE”

Yup. We lost a lot of legends the past 5 years. Franklin was one of my favorites too.

It really was perfectly setup where you get to watch the Big 10 in the mornings, SEC from 2-9:30pm, and then end the day with the USC Trojans vs Hawaii. Back when it felt like all of America was in to the college football landscape.

Now it feels like a southern sport with the midwest holding it down in Big 10 country. East coast is basketball, and the west coast is...just nothing.

And Vern. The guys now are awful, just awful. And I don't mean for their game time leans at all, just huge bored. College football deserves better, the best.

The GOAT. As a kid, I got up and parked in front of the TV and changed the channel by hand between Black Belt Theater, Mid South Wrestling, and College Football. Remember when a pimple faced Jim Lampley used to do the scores at halftime, and ABC would pipe in those phony typewriter sounds in the background? Man, i miss being young

I know I miss him. Getting to live through Madden in NFL booth and Jackson in college football booth spoiled me for life. Gottfried and Franklin on ESPN was a good listen, too. I miss the way things were.

when i was growing up, there were 4 guys that i've always associated w/ CFB...

Keith jackson, john saunders, brent musburger, and brad nessler

2 of the 4 have died, and musburger's in obscurity

Watched 2000 FSU and Clemson the other day on ESPNU, Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried were so damn good. The time that we had them, with Verne, Musberger, Brad Nessler, and Keith Jackson all working at the same was greatness. The guys doing it now, for the most part, just flat out don't have talent

Nailed it. ESPN pushing the SEC in the College Football wars because that was their Conference turned CFB into NASCAR and turned off fans. The South won and people tuned out across the Nation.

CFB is in a 10-year ratings decline..starting with the rematch...The lowest rated title game of all-time. Glad ESPN got burned on that one while shamelessly forcing and bribing voters.

A sport is only healthy if the entire nation cares about it. ESPN and CBS made a big mistake in on!y promoting one Conference for the last 15 years.

The sport is great when its regional, the sport sucks when its only a region...Because of ESPN Promotion and their deal with the SEC.
