College football: Too regional?
Posted by Dr Rosenrosen on 1/14/20 at 2:52 pm822
Since 2006, only one school from outside the Southeast has a NC. I would argue that it's becoming bad for the sport. The Texas schools are diluting each other. OU plays no defense. The West Coast badly needs some elite programs, but USC is a mess and Oregon can't quite get over the top.
Former powers like Nebraska and Michigan are scuffling.
Am I wrong?

And check out where Ohio State gets the bulk of their difference makers from.

The LSU win was refreshing for now, but if it's basically OSU, Clem, Bama/LSU/UGA dominating the next five years, that is a problem.

I mean I don't know what you want anyone to do about it.
College football always has been the most popular in the South and the Midwest.
It still is.
If they're not doing as well as they used to it's not because they don't care or aren't putting the resources they need to being elite programs again.
It's not like college baseball where like 18 of the top 25 teams are almost entirely from the South.

Then Michigan best get its shite together along with teams in PAC12..... I don't get the PAC 12 there is some serious talent coming out of the West Coast.

Yes it’s too regional and it’s hurting the interest in other markets but there’s no solution to it. The talent resides where it resides

Does the South just value sports more than other regions?

It emphasizes college sports way more than other regions that's for sure.

College sports.
Pros matter more on the coasts and certain parts of the Midwest.

This. But it could change if programs like Nebraska, Colorado, Washington, USC, UCLA, Michigan and a few others could get their heads of their asses. I like college football more when it’s more than just the same teams dominating. But other than Michigan, those other programs are really far behind.

My immediate theory was the following.
We have an honor culture, and sports are more important in an honor culture. They foster competitiveness, and give men an alternative to actual fighting.
Areas without honor cultures, like New England, wouldn’t place the same value on athletics.

Villanova has two of the last four championships in basketball.

Who cares
It's the only region that cares.
It's like that in the NFL, just reversed.
No one in the SE really cares and outside of the Saints, no one has won.

So people in New England fight instead of play football?

No
they value College Sports (mostly football) more than other regions.

It's a big problem with the same 5-6 schools consolidating all the best players. Fans of other programs lose interest.
Winning 10 games for my team (WV) is a huge deal and for the Bamas and Clemsons it's a fireable offense. WV is closer to a good high school team at this point than they are to LSU.
Watching the game last night shows just how far away we are from the elite college teams and for alot of fans it feels kinda pointless.

it really isn't though. Especially with many grads of these schools now moving around the country, not just staying in the SE. NYC alone literally has a bar (sometimes multiple) for every SEC school.
college football is yearly only behind the NFL in TV Ratings.

eh I wouldn't say that
especially in a state like say South Carolina, where it's literally all we got.

It’s no big secret. That’s why we are recruiting nationally now. And doing it very successfully
