College Football- Just not have Rankings to Begin the Season

Looking at the schedules of teams like Notre Dame or Indiana why not have every team come in unranked and have a point system which can be improvised by each conference. Maybe have each conference have coaches and sports writer's rank order of predicted finish within their own conference and start from there. Say the #3 team plays the #1 team from difference conferences and award points based on teams beating higher seated teams. Just basically a clean slate to start the new season. No built in advantages.
These preseason rankings already give teams like Notre Dame and Indiana a built in advantage when they start top 10 and even when they lose they still are already highly ranked. Even teams that start high can be jumped based on the point system by playing tougher teams. Just tired of teams that play nobody's staying in front of teams because they are undefeated come week 4 or 5. Looking at some of these schedules like Texas or even LSU should factor alot more than say a BYU ranked #9 this week. Why is Indiana and Notre Dame ranked so high THIS year they have played nobody's? Let them earn their 2026 ranking

How else would they get Oregon up into the top 2 without pre-season rankings?

Does that really solve what happened with Penn State in 2025 where they were Preseason AP #2 and stacked three early wins against Nevada, Florida International, and Villanova to start 3-0?
As a reminder, they ended up finishing unranked with a 7-6 record.
Preseason Polls are fun for fans and create buzz to sell tickets for some programs that aren’t always sold out and/or residing in the Top 10 or Top 25 or Receiving Votes.
And if the AP & Coaches stopped doing them, people would construct their own using Sportsbook’s College Football National Championship Futures Odds.

that is one season now do Penn st the other four or five seasons they finished top 12 and probably would have gotten into a playoff even when they lost the normal two games to Ohio St and Michigan.

Just saying what is the point for preseason rankings for a totally different season. This shite will matter come selection time because I can tell you this I can see the SEC having some 3 lost teams left out compared to the teams I mentioned. They will say we beat a ranked Illinois in week 4. How many times did we hear you can't leave a one loss or undefeated team out?

This is basically what we already have.
The CFP does not have any rankings yet.

The intial poll does matter because you either fall, remain the same or move up. As mentioned earlier look at Oregon and Penn st. Oregon doesn't look very good but they did start around #5 and even with the loses they can still move right back up with a few wins over lesser opponents

Noooo.
The controversy is what makes CFB fun. You gotta have preseason rankings. With the playoff system, the teams that deserve to be there in the end will be there in the end.
