Coach who never punts makes CFB debut - wins 84-43, QB throws FCS record 10 TDs

The former Arkansas High school coach who was made nationally famous a decade ago on HBO's Real Sports for never punting, and always on-side kicking, made his collegiate coaching debut Saturday with the Presbyterian Blue Hose.
To say it was a success is an understatement.
Yes, the competition was dogshit, but it's not like anyone in FCS is going to confuse Presbyterian College with North Dakota State, either.

Ren Hefley had himself a day on Saturday, and set an FCS record in the process.
Hefley threw 10 touchdown passes to lead Presbyterian College to an 84-43 win over St. Andrews, an NAIA school, on Saturday in South Carolina, giving new coach Kevin Kelley his first win with the program.
Hefley, who transferred in from Michigan, finished the day completing 38 of his 50 pass attempts while racking up 538 yards. He threw his 10th touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, too, and didn’t play the rest of the way.
Backup quarterback Tyler Huff then came in and threw two touchdowns himself, setting a school record of 12 touchdowns in a single contest. One receiver, freshman Jaylen Witcher, had three touchdown grabs in the first half, and Matthew Rivera had a pair of touchdowns throughout the game. The rest of the Blue Hose’s touchdowns came from different receivers each time.
Kelley landed at Presbyterian College earlier this summer after a long stint at Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas. The coach has earned a reputation of almost never punting the ball and will “100 percent of the time” attempt an onside kick when the game is within three touchdowns. Field position, he believes, is completely overrated.
“You win games by winning the turnover value, not the field position,” Kelley told Yahoo Sports in 2018.
Though it’s undoubtedly unconventional, to say the least, Kelley’s strategy has worked. He compiled a 216-29-1 record and won nine Arkansas state titles at the high school level, and just racked up a massive, record-setting win on Saturday in his first ever collegiate game.
At least for now, it’s hard to doubt it.

He played an NAIA school who has only had a program for 3 years. A bad NAIA school at that
The 48 points should be a concern

I know he knows college teams are better at recovering onsides than small Arkansas HS

His teams always give up a shite ton of points because of the onside kicking and his disregard for field position.
His philosophy is to just score more than you're opponent. Style points don't matter.
As someone who watched a many of his HS games from an opposing point of view, playing against his team was terrifying because of the pressure they put on you. Most teams eventually crumbled under it.
We'll see how it works against better teams with more confidence and talent.

It still blows my mind that Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina plays Division I football.

Never punting is one thing.... but always on-side kicking? No way the numbers say that’s the best thing to do.

Its basically all about creating turnovers. He's betting on recovering more than you at midfield, therefore playing the numbers that turnovers dictate who wins more than any other stat. His team also practices inside kicks all the time, while most teams, even in college, typically dedicate about 20 minutes a week to it.

You can argue all day whether or not it will work but i applaud the guy for sticking to his guns.

Sounds like a Hal Mumme type, and well, we all know how that ended.

They likely spend hours each week practicing onside kicks. The kickers may spend 40% of their practice time on different kick variations.
I love challenging these kinds of norms. It typically takes extremes to prove out to get the mainstream POV to begin shifting.

On the other hand, Presbyterian is the single-smallest DI school, even including all those that don't play football.
They have like 1200 undergrad students. Probably somewhere close to 20% of their student body play sports.

This only works in Madden. I doubt it works at a major college level.

How the hell is anyone supposed to take a school like that seriously with a nickname like "Blue Hose"?

He also has a different way of kicking the onside kick. I think he has his kicker lay the ball on it’s side.

At least in HS, he had about 9 or 10 different variations of onside kicks and he even employed two kickers on the field at once so you didn't know which direction it was going.
He also virtually never used his kickers for field goals or extra points, because he almost always goes for 2 and and 4th down. His games are nuts to watch.

I mean, they definitely sound entertaining. I would be a little worried about giving up 43 points to an NAIA school.
But they will definitely steal some possessions and knwoing you have 4 downs to get 10 yards every time really opens up your 3rd down play calling.
