Spector just needs to be on the field. Dolo doesn't have a bad cross, and if we are short at CB, Boca will probably play there. The key is to keep Bornstein off the field.

Agreed. These should be the 5 defenders in consideration for the US: Cherundolo, Spector, Onyewu, Bocanegra, and DeMerit. No room for Bornstein or Pearce, except maybe the bench for one of them.

no way. our depth is nonexistant once you get beyond our ideal starting eleven.

we have a bunch of attacking midfielders that bob doesn't know how to use and that's about it

Well at least Dempsey has a very capable replacement in Holden if he isn't fit by June. I pray to the soccer gods (just not Maradona) that it is just an MCL.

If we have gooch and demerit in the center, you could possibly move bocanegra to the left,

not IMO. Backline of Spector, DeMerit, Gooch, and Bocanegra would be the slowest in the tournament.

While I would prefer Cherundolo to Spector, who would you prefer to add speed to the line-up?

God!? Why!!??
frick England, it's all a conspiracy to sink us before we get there. Can't be losing to the colonies again. fricking limies.

Probably, but they are also the best defenders we have. We will have trouble with speedy wingers, i.e. Aaron Lennon, but who doesn't have trouble with speedy wingers. The trade-off is something we have to consider, but you cannot seriously put a player like Bornstein on the field in the WC. He was getting raped in CONCACAF.

Bornstein's clearances have accounted for at least 3 goals from my count.

I have absolutely no idea why Pearce was dropped in favor of Bornstein. Even though the back-line of Bocanegra, Gooch, Demerit, and Spector is slow, the fact that they are superior defenders makes up for that in a big way. It's not like we have defenders with lots of pace anyway, unless you count Marvel Wynne.

The problem with having a backline like this is two fold. A couple of the confed cup goals were given up to guys taking shots from 25 yards out. We've gotta be able to eliminate this, either by getting a defensive midfielder who can play the position, or a defender getting out there quick enough.
What's the point of having 4 defenders that do almost the identical thing? They're almost all interchangeable in the middle, but are less than ideal at left or right back.
Another problem this presents, is that they present little threat going forward and making overlapping runs in their half of the field. The opposing wingers will be able to continue to creep forward knwoing that they won't have much responsibility to drop back.
While they might be our 4 best defenders, IMO its pretty useless to play all 4 at the same time. 4 guys good in the air, and awfully slow. IMO not wise to just play compact in the back.

It's probably because Pearce was getting no time at Hansa Rostock and playing for your club is a pretty big deal for Bradley.
That's what kept Ching ahead of Jozy for so long and has benched Adu.

Dolo out right atleast brings a little pace and threat of going forward to our lineup.

On a different note, has anyone heard about Jermaine Jones returning for Schalke? He was supposed to practice in December but that didn't last for long.

Here's a random proposition: what about playing Beasley at LB?
Seriously though, he was always pretty good defensively, and really, who the hell else is there?

I would definitely say that Spector is way better on the ball than he is in the air. Watching him at West Ham, he's laid some pretty through balls, like in the Tottenham game where he took the ball from left back, and slotted a nice little straight ball into Carlton Cole's diagonal run. That's the only part I disagree with you on.
The issue is only at LB. If we play Dolo on the right, and Spector on the left, we do get a bit more attacking width, but Spector is shaky playing to his left.

Didn't he play one game at left back and fail miserably?

I think we tried that and he got raped pretty badly. But he was also out of form. Maybe now that he has gotten a bit of confidence back he can play down the left, but I have no confidence in finding a LB before the WC. It will be a makeshift backline, unless we call up Edgar Castillo or Michael Orozco.

Really? I dont recall.
JJ playing in WC is in doubts right now, unless he can come back within the next month or so. Little game time in the past year, hasn't played a single game for the US, and hasn't even practiced with the US. Chemistry would be a huge issue.
Hopefully he comes back soon..he'd fill a much needed void...otherwise it's freakin Ricardo Clark?
