Castro plays very good defense. Don't confuse his somewhat nonchalant attitude or aloof play as bad defense. It's something that he's actually gotten a lot batter at this season.
He's 24, has shown massive improvement at the plate and is under a team friendly contract. Other than Troy Tulowitzki, he's about as an attractive MLB shortstop than anyone IMO.
With that being said, I've heard the names the Cubs would possibly ask for and that appears to be Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard. Not one or the other, but both. I would be tempted to take that deal, but still...an established all star at shortstop who is 24, maturing and getting better. That's probably something the Cubs want to build with right now considering the timing of the front office's plan.
I'd honestly like to see Baez be traded before Castro at this point and that's saying something because I've come a looooong way from my Castro hate from last year.

Castro has really impressed me this year. His defense is getting better, his range factor is one of the best in his position, and his power is starting to translate what we though he could do - .285/22/90. As a SS or 2B, I'll take that all day.

Agree. Not sure how anyone who has actually watched him play would say he is terrible defensively. Castro has been a VERY impressive player in 2014.

I can't blame Lester for what he said because it's easy to get short with Castro after his performance last year. But yes, this year has been a great year for him. Hopefully it's more of what's to come.

Watching him make the almost daily basket catch on a blooper to short left is a thing of beauty

Soler, Baez and Bryant HR porn.
That is the very first time I think I've ever seen Jorge Soler's swing.

Oh no doubt at all. He looked like he didn't care most of the time last year. This year he seems to have gotten his head screwed on straight. If the reason is Rick Renteria I don't know, but he seems to much more competitive this year. I even heard that this year he has been running up in the tunnel between at bats to watch his previous swings and how the pitchers approached him. That is definitely not something he did in the past.

Man, he made one of these this weekend (I believe it was against the Nats) way out in left field. I think Coghlan was playing in LF and was coming in hard for that ball and Castro still went out there with a LF charging at him full speed and made a beautiful catch. Thank God Coghlan stepped to the side at the last second.

UZR is -5.3, or 23rd in the MLB amongst SS
Keep in mind Zero is considered league average. But you think he plays very good defense?
I'm not knocking the season on offense. But let's see where he ends up.

Uh, the Bryant homer went over the bullpen to the opposite field. Wow.

True, he hasn't had his back to the plate while the pitcher is pitching at all this year.
I jest of course. I love castro, and would prefer to trade baez (even though the castro return would be much better) if it came to that. With all that said, and I seem to recall castro at the beginning of the season saying he'd be ok with it, it probably wouldn't hurt moving him to 2b, because i wouldn't really say he plays good defense.

Interesting. I'll admit to being slow on the uptake on defensive measures. To the naked eye, I've seen progress out of him on defense.

Yea, he just have never stricken me as a "winning" player.
Above average hitter at times, crap defense, crap attitude, lacks focus. Id be happy if they dealt him.

Does he really have a crappy attitude? I don't know if he's been accused of that. Aloof, sure. But even that's gotten a lot better this season. Look, I'm not going to take up for him or mourn if he gets traded, but to me it's apparent that Starlin Castro is maturing as a player and I think that should be commended.

His offensive surface numbers and underlying peripherals are very impressive this year given his age. His defensive metrics are abysmal this year but in the past have been more than adequate, so I'm not sure what the problem is there. I don't watch enough of the Cubs to have a strong personal opinion either way on his attitude, but the consensus isn't great.
Cubs aren't in "win-now" mode, so I'd want something serious in return to move a 24 y/o productive MLB player. If they get closer to actually contending and still feel he's a team detractor, then will be the time to move him.

Far be it from me from getting between Cubs fans and hype of all of their great players, but this seems to rank Castro 93rd defensively among all those who have played SS this season. Now I don't really understand defensive metrics (and as long as they have Peralta in the top 5, I won't bother to try to learn them) so it may not even be applicable.
