I'm 5'11" and 170 lbs, but I'm in very good shape. I don't do bench press. What would be a respectable first time for me?

This depends.

1)Have you NEVER done bench press?
2)Have you at least done some weight training before even without bench press?

or

3)Would the next time you weight trained be the first time? (if it's been more than couple of years, you might as well say yes to this one).

All of that comes into play although generically speaking, if I was training a guy 5'11" 170 who had never weight trained before, I'd start you off absurdly light on bench press just to see how you handled the weight. You'd probably bench about 115 for me for a workout or two and then we'd go up from there. You'd probably improve on a steep grade at first.

If I had you for 6 months, I would probably have in my mind that I could get you doing sets of 6 using at least 225. But, again, that's all generic shite. If you're a lean 5'11" 170 and have been a vidiot your whole life, it could be tough sledding. On the other hand, if you've always been very active but just haven't worked out, you could find yourself benching 270 in 6 months.

Can't run like I used to--although I could probably get back into running shape with some training.

Thats really good as long as you realize that time would probably equate to 4.9 laser time at the combine. Which means you would barely outrun Jameis.

My dad used to say they would have to time my 40 with a sun dial. Never really knew what that meant, but pretty sure he didn't think I was fast.

Funny you should mention the Y because the BEST performance I see on a routine basis these days is from a damned 62 year old lady at the local Y here in Madison.

This chick does full on Yoga complete with the single leg pulled straight in front to straight to the side, to straight behind her to above her head...........ON A frickING BALANCE BALL!!! Without every even looking like there's a remote chance in hell she's going to fall. She also does hand stands on the bitch. HAND frickING STANDS!! And I don't mean holding on to the side of the ball, I mean flat palm on surface of ball hand stands.

Spoke to her husband. Turns out she was a top college gymnast in her day but IDGAF. She's f'n 62.

So, the next time any of us think we're bad assed.......just remember, there's a 62 year old 5' lady out there who is probably more impressive.

I'm not sure I've ever been around anybody that's ever bragged about running a faster 40 than an O-lineman on any level. Ever.

It's weird that this has happened so much to you that it irritates you so badly.

Someone should organize a Tigerdroppings "Official Combine". Posters can sign up and we can run the exact events at the NFL combine, may the best man win.

I heard Chris Long say that the vets joke all the time about how they would bomb the combine. Says he'd bench 8-9 reps at 225, but he slings 300 lbs men around. If these e-thletes would beat the combine participants, they would destroy most of the NFL vets!

I don't think you understand their point.

Their point is, training to do high reps at 225 is not something the typical football player finds necessary to his craft. That's not what they're focusing on.

Hence, just because you can do 225 for high reps doesn't mean you can play DL in the NFL.

You're conflating two skills. A guy may well be highly capable of high reps at 225 at his local gym but be FAR from NFL or any other type pro caliber athlete.

Those of you acting like 225 high rep is some kind of amazing feat out yourselves as not having spent much time in gyms.

That's one of my biggest strengths, my speed. It's just good enough to be a flag footall burner in a 30+ league
