Either way, what are the small markets supposed to do? Bend over for the big markets because they’re big markets? frick that.
honestly we should remember we're lucky to have a team. When the SKC falls behind every other building in the league is when we probably won't anymore

Yet the highly subsidized smaller markets always see a conspiracy to steal "our players" when free agent rumors begin.

You misunderstand me. I'm not intimating that conspiracies are always afoot. I'm saying there IS a bias towards bigger markets in the media, and with the power FAs have, it puts smaller markets even more behind the 8 ball than they traditionally already are.

Because Orlando had gotten the first two years in a row and flipped Chris Webber for Penny.

Getting Shaq and Webber in back to back lotteries got the rest of the league to change the lottery odds.

I don’t understand the “small market” term. When they release numbers for the super bowl or World Series or CFP national championship game...New orleans is CONSISTENTLY toward the very top of the list as far as ratings and viewers...if not at the very top. So, it’s obvious there are a LOT of sports fans with extremely varied rooting interests. The people of New Orleans and surrounding areas WILL support teams with winning aspirations or even just lovable players...and it’s all in support. So shitting on our market is just mind blowing.

It's numbers. NOLA market has 1.2 million, most NBA cities have over 2 million, and NY and LA are over 10 million (not looking it up)

Where is there more potential money to be made?

Usually referring to television markets or media markets, which do not always correlate to city size.

For example, San Antonio is listed as the #31 TV market in the US, even though we're the 7th largest city in the nation. New Orleans is somewhere around the #50 TV market if memory serves.

So the "small market" label gets slapped in some pretty big towns, even though smaller towns support national pro teams. The metric has purpose, but can be lazily applied, IMO.

Are we just going to dismiss that last year this team swept the Trailblazers in the playoffs and were competitive in all but one game against the Warriors?

In short, yes.

It isn't changing the size of your media and market appeal, even if you win multiple titles-- San Antonio has budged a bit, and it only took until their 4th or 5th title, and even now, its a qualified 'But...'

Problem is that you have 30 NBA teams and about 7 of them are in huge markets. And most of those suck.

Teams in big markets-

LA Lakers
LA Clippers
NY Knicks
Brooklyn Nets
Chicago Bulls
Houston Rockets
GS Warriors (SF/San Jose)

Past that you have teams that are in big-ish markets but aren’t considered top tier like Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, etc.

Then you have the small market teams like Portland, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Memphis, Charlotte, OKC, Indiana Pacers, Orlando, Milwaukee, etc.

There’s a lot more small market teams than big market teams and a number of those big market teams have been godawful for long periods of time.

If the big market teams want a league consisting of major markets only, then they can start buying out small market franchises. Average franchise value is between the hundreds of millions or the low billions, so start setting that MSG Network money aside now.

TMac & Grant Hill wanting in on Orlando as free agents (Technically sign & trades) ? Even Tim Duncan considered joining the Magic to form the 1st modern " Big 3".

Orlando was considered a prime NBA destination once & were extremely popular. Have the Knicks , Bulls or Lakers come close to signing such free agent talent at their peaks ,anytime during the past 20 years?

The size of a core city in a metro is meaningless. What matters is the number of people within driving distance of your arena on a weeknight and how many people get that weeknight game on their local cable.

New Orleans is close to 1.3 million. You add Houma and BR and you have close to 2.5 million. A successful team will certainly draw from those areas,

The market is more then just metro NoLa

Media and ESPN sucks arse, Nuggets had an outstanding season and a fun bunch of players to watch. They battled GS the whole season for the 1 seed, was it realistic that they were gonna win the finals? No, but for fricks sake the shitty Lakers and Knicks probably had triple the appearances on television.

It’s a shame, I love that Milwaukee has a shot at the title. Hell with the major city teams.

It’s the same problem as the NFC East in the NFL.
