Title says it all. Who has fallen the farthest? Who will wait the longest to recover?

Nebraska - Absolute powerhouse in the 90’s after knocking on the door for a while in the ‘80’s. Let’s not forget that Bob Devaney has them as a monster program before Osborne. They fired in a winner in Solich, fired less of a winner in Callahan, fired a decent winner in Pelini, and they’re currently fighting for relevance with Frost. As a kid, I never thought I’d see the program this mediocre.

Tennessee - I keep waiting for them to come back. Like Nebraska, they were a staple in the 90’s and were relevant in the early - 2000’s. I still remember them pasting Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl in 2005. It seems like they haven’t even been to THAT level in a long time. It’s a shame their rivalry with Florida is all but dead.

Colorado - Another Big 8 power in the late ‘80’s and early-‘90’s. The rivalry with Nebraska was must-see TV. They were champions under McCartney, still a national power with Neuheisel, and had glimpses of greatness with Barnett. After that, it’s been a whole bunch of shite, with the exception of a 10-win Alamo Bowl season. Chris Fowler must be sad the Buffs don’t ever get a prime time game.

Miami - They’ve been more of a roller-coaster type team. They’ve also had more off-field influences than any other team. Despite the fact that Miami is a private school, the talent in the area is rich. How they’ve managed to become THIS mediocre is impressive.

Florida State - you can copy and paste from Miami. This program fell hard and fast.

Texas/Michigan/USC - I’ll be creative and lump these three together. They’re not terrible, but not where they should be. We’ve seen glimpses of success. Texas manhandling Georgia in the Sugar, the USC win against Penn State in Pasadena, and a Michigan squad that was in the CFP hunt until facing OSU. The hump is right in front of these squads, but they have yet to go over it. It seems like the mid-2000’s were a long time ago.

ALSO-RANS:

Georgia Tech - National champs more recently than UGa. There were some damn good teams under O’Leary, but the triple option under Johnson represented a steady decline in recruiting.

Arkansas - It’s hard to believe this team was playing for a SEC West crown and potential national title spot in 2011.

Virginia Tech - I’m thinking the success of this program begins and ends with Frank Beamer.

Definitely Nebraska. They can’t be a powerhouse in modern college football unless they cheat their asses off. USC too. They have everything to dominate, but they still suck.

Colorado was a flash in the pan when Oklahoma sucked.

Not much of a fall.

Nebraska was huge in the 70s, a failed but big-wig in the 80s that couldn't win their bowls against more athletic teams and then a monster in the 90s.

But it wasn't a shock that Nebraska fell to earth.

The biggest shock is Miami sucking for 20 years.

All that talent in their backyard, it's just unfathomable that they would have a dry spell like Nebraska.

So Miami

Miami simply because the amount of talent in south Florida alone should have them a perennial top 10 team.

17 players from Florida in top 100 recruits in the country, and not a single one committed to Miami.

Thinking about it probably: 1) Miami 2) Nebraska 3) USC. In that order since they won five, three, and two NCs respectively since 1980.

Although I do think both Miami and USC could turn it around if they had administrations that really prioritized football. I don't think Nebraska has the same recruiting potential.

Don't think they belong with the others. The McCartney era was the only period with sustained success.

And you said they were still a national power with Neuheisel, but when The Sporting News had them preseason #1, they finished 5-6. Neuheisel ended up bolting for Washington a year later.

This is my pick because, even though Jimbo seemed to be losing control of the program after winning the national championship, FSU still made the CFP the next season, and beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl with a top 10 finish the season after that. The decline since then has been remarkable however.

Most of this board has been alive to see lean years from the other programs mentioned in the OP, but Bowden was in his first year the last time FSU had consecutive losing seasons.

Where's the 3 golden domer programs? Notre Dame, Army and Navy? They were the standard of excellence in college football for decades, no? The title didn't classify a certain era did it?

Also, what about Minnesota...a program that has 7 National Titles? 1904, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941, and 1960!! Just sayin.....

Fastest I would say is Florida State

2013 - National Champions
2014 - Rose Bowl appearance
2015 - Peach Bowl appearance
2016 - Orange Bowl victory

2017 - Finished the regular season .500
2018 - 5-7
2019 - 6-7

1. nebraska
leaving texas10/12 conference hurts texas recruiting.
i heard their (former?)
AD say they did it to be able to recruit chicago hoops.
2. southern California was kicked in the nuts for recruiting violations. deserved. they will be back.
3. miami. the ocean will take Miami before they can win a natty.

Took Frank 9 years at VT to log his first 10 win season. His last 4 seasons were also single digit wins. 16 seasons under 10 wins, 13 at 10 or over.

Michigan doesn’t really even belong in this conversation. They have ONE NC since 1948. They had some pretty good teams under BO but could never get over that hump to join what Nebraska and FSU and Miami have done. Those three were really really good for a long period of time. If you were to put Michigan in the SEC they would be behind at least 5 teams every year. Just look at what happens when thy go up against teams that have better athletes and way more speed.

Not to mention they've been a perennial top 15 team under Harbaugh's team. The only reason why the perception of their program is so bad is that they've lost to Ohio State 15 out of the their last 16 meetings. Outside of that, this is the program they've always been.

Based on where they once were, it's no question that it's Nebraska or Miami. I give the edge to Nebraska because they are little more than an afterthought in their current conference whereas Miami has at least sniffed a conference title game in the last few years.
