C.E. Byrd Appeal Set for 2 p.m. This Afternoon (Link fixed)

Byrd's not going to go down without a fight. From what I hear, most people know that it's pretty cut and dry that they violated the rules. However, I also hear that Byrd is ready to make this fight ugly if they have to.
If they lose the appeal, they are ineligible for the playoffs in football. Byrd is 8-1 and projected as the 4-seed in the 5A playoffs.

KTBS has learned that a Caddo Parish representative as well as Byrd principal Jerry Badgely and Byrd head football coach Mike Suggs will attend the hearing.

Does this mean they are going to try to take down other schools who I violated the rule? I can't see them making it ugly for the LHSAA since its clear they broke the rules.

frick Byrd. Their students and alumni are such douchebags.

They blatantly broke the rules and got caught. If they win the appeal, what's the point of having rules?

This wasn't just Byrd. This was the Caddo School Board. They switched from a block schedule two years ago and kept the same time but it just flowed into an extra period.
I realize that Byrd isn't the bastion of ethics and integrity that West Monroe is, but cut them some slack.

When WM has broken the rules and been caught they've paid the price, including forfeiting games and missing the playoffs.
Question remains. If they broke the rules, were caught and penalized, then win an appeal, what is the point of having rules?

The point of the appeal is to explain the entire situation. The LHSAA made their ruling and now Byrd and CPSB have the chance to respond. Having said that, I don't think the odds are in Byrd's favor. If they did win, it's because they presented overwhelming evidence.

According to the article Byrd self reported... now they're appealing?

I actually think they will win. Look back at what the LHSAA did to the Catholic league for violations in the Spring. The new commish said he doesn't want to throw the book at anyone and as long as they complied with them, he would let them off light. Would be hypocritical to not give Shreveport the same courtesy. Good luck, we'd rather beat you on the field.

I think that might be one of their key arguments.

I really don't think this is a "North" vs "South" issue.

What rule did they break? Not familiar with the situation and the link in the OP doesn't work.

quote:
PRACTICE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY - At all levels of play in all LHSAA sports prior to reporting for a team practice
session that school day, if applicable, the school shall prohibit a student(s) from participating in any form of athletic
participation for more than one regular class period during instructional time on a school day. This includes participation
in weight lifting sessions, conditioning sessions, skull sessions, the viewing of game films, viewing of game video tapes
or DVDs, or any other similar athletic session. The principal is directly responsible to the association for his/her school’s
strict compliance with these rules. If a school allows a student(s) to violate the rule, the school shall be ruled immediately
ineligible for varsity state championship honors in the sport in which the student competes or has competed, and also
penalized under Rule 5.11.12 - Schools involved in infractions inconsistent with wholesome competition or a wholesome
athletic program including sportsmanship violations. This rule shall be enforced throughout the entire school year.
At the beginning of the 2014 school year, Caddo Parish moved away from a block schedule to a more traditional schedule with shorter class periods. Byrd, Southwood, and Huntington did not adjust their athletic period time. They were still using the same amount of time as they used during the block schedule.

They had TWO class periods that were dedicated to athletics. Rule in LHSAA handbook states that schools are forbidden from having more then 1 "class period" during the school day for athletics. From what I understand, Byrd (as well as Huntington and Southwood) had athletics (football/Basketball) 6th and 7th period.
Byrd is justifying that because Bossier schools (who are on the block system) get 90 minutes a day for athletics they should be able to get the same minutes, regardless of how many class periods are used.
The rule in the LHSAA handbook is very clear and even states the punishment for breaking the rule. Also, the rule does not state number of minutes but specifically dictates "class period"
In my opinion, Byrd has NO case. But this will force the LHSAA to re-look at the rule because some school are getting more "athletic time" than others.

I would agree with this. But it's definitely a poorly worded rule considering that "class period" can vary from school to school.

Good, I hope they win.

I agree.
On a tangent, I like the concept of block scheduling as a pedagogical tool.
What/How did "catching the Catholic League" mean?
