The MVP, despite the literal meaning of the acronym, goes to the best player in the league. It always has. And thank goodness bc "value" is far too subjective. And which is more important turning a 7 seed into a 2 seed, or turning a 3/4 seed into one of the best teams of all time?

i love when melo fanboys use the "who else is going to score?" excuse. the team has pieces to compensate for carmelo's deficiencies, namely defense and rebounding. same story in denver. they need guys like tyson chandler, kidd, shumpert, kenyon martin, birdman, and chauncey(in denver) to do the dirty work b/c melo aint gunna do it. then they complain those guys arent offensive studs, too.

cowherd is right. melo is fools gold. he'll never win a title. scoring titles only.

Did I mention that Melo plays no defense?
Do you mean Lebron?

Courtesy of Synergy Stats, overall, LeBron allows 0.89ppp (points per possession), good enough for a mediocre 169th in the league. In isolation situations, he allows 0.82ppp (167th) on 38% FG shooting. Again, mediocre.

Lebron is a better defender than a computer generated version of the ideal defender

quote:

LeBron James is better at playing defense than the idealized version of an NBA defender, as conceptualized by an analytic system that factors in everything from the precise positioning of every player on the floor to the individual skill-sets of the players involved on a given play. LeBron James is not fair.

If you think Lebron can't play D, then you may as well give up on watching basketball because you clearly don't get it

This was definitely on display in G1 vs the Bucks. He was all over the court. Helping/cutting off passing lanes into the paint, while also rotating back to the corner in time. It's pretty amazing the watch.

LeBron's a lock down on-ball defender as well, when he needs to be. But he often shies away from it to save energy/not pick up fouls. So instead of just runs them into the help defense or sets them up for a block from behind. The only time the casual fan will notice LeBron engaged defensively is the 1-2 times he gets a steal or the last 5 minutes of a game when he's really wanting to lock down an individual. Outside of those circumstances, most people won't appreciate how great he is because help defense goes completely unnoticed for the most part. (Understandably because it's hard to attribute blame for a missed rotation unless watch the team enough to know what they're trying to accomplish.)

Edit: Or take that Knicks game at MSG several weeks ago. Melo could barely get a shot off in the 4th quarter because LeBron wouldn't even let him catch the ball in the half court. But that amazing defense doesn't go into synergy's stats because there were no shots taken. And it's hard to really notice unless you're looking for it because it's easy just to assume the Knicks messed up by not going to Carmelo in the 4th or blame JR Smith for being a chucker, whatever.

I was being sarcastic. LeBron is perhaps the most versatile defender in the league and a terrific help defender.

while the knicks are my favorite team and carmelo is my favorite player, lebron definitely deserves mvp. anyone who goes against that is just being ignorant. melo is more valuable to his team than lebron is to the heat but lebron is the best player in the league.

that being said i still have melo top 3 in the league possibly even 2 as of late

The best player, almost by definition, provides the most value to a team.

With him the Knicks are the 2 seed, without him they probably don't even make the playoffs.

Take LeBron off the Heat and they are still a top 4 seed.
When Carmelo was off the court this year(huge sample size, 1 entire season, the Knicks outscored their opponents by 2.9 points per 100 possessions.

When Lebron was off the court, the Heat were outscored by 2.3 points.

Not sure how that doesn't completely disprove that theory.

To go a step further to assess "value", when on court, Lebron's team outscored opponents by 12.8, for a net of 15.2(rounding).

Carmelo on court outscored opponents by 6.1 points for a net of 3.2.

So, not only is Lebron better, but this really does prove value as well.

Put Lebron on any team this year, and they are a #1 seed.

LBJ is the MVP he is having a monster year Most dominate player in the league

Kevin Durant would be my #2 selection for MVP. 40/50/90 club is pretty impressive.

I like Melo, he can score at will and is solid. But I think he is to one sided.

But that's not how the award works.
that's debatable. With Lebron the Heat are going to win the championship. Without him they'd be out after the first round.

Melo is not even the MVP of the knicks. JR Smith is.
