Cards will extend him for sure. He'll get his money. I just don't understand punting 2 damn years. We could have been competitive NEXT year with a few tweaks.

are you claiming the line moved 5 points in 20 minutes?

He has put up almost 25 WAR through his age 24 season.
Is the best defender in baseball, an elite baserunner and an above average hitter with very good past production as a hitter.
And will do the Cards no good if he's sitting on the bench.

i think he's great defensively. average offensively. his WAR is probably skewed due to his defense. the trade doesnt seem very one-sided to me. not sure who it will work out for in the long run but looking at it today it seems about even.

I doubt we extend him if he continues to play at his current level, he can pursue free agency and we have younger guys behind him who can play some and are a lot cheaper than what his market value will be

Absent all of our non-performing players suddenly meeting their potential, I don't see it.

Yup. Plus, it is cheaper to buy defensive WAR. I bet guys like Nick Franklin and Brad Miller can put up 3+ WAR seasons.

Plus, we'll get a first rounder when he walks.

Win win for both teams
Braves get a starter who is cost controlled till 2019. They get a pitcher, who is injury prone, but does have potential.
Cardinals get a RF, who is hitting his prime years25-28. And the key, is they get a bullpen guy, who can allow Carlos Martinez to start.
Who knows if Cards resign Heyward, alhough, they do resign those they want. Even waiting it out in free agency on guys.
Shelby is soft, he needs some one to light a fire under the guy. He has a lot of potential, and has shown some of it.

You would have still had good starting pitching with Teheran, Wood, and Minor. We would have still had a good bullpen. Replace the easy outs like BJ and we could have competed.

I don't know what to feel. Sad to see him go. Wish we would have seen what he could do with a competent hitting coach that would tell him to stand closer to the plate.
So you don't think any Braves hitting coach tried to move him closer to the plate?
They tried REPEATEDLY over the years. And every time they did, he went all Chipper on'em.
So, yeah... where Jason stands at the plate now? That's where HE has chosen to stand. And he'll continue to be busted outside. And he'll continue to flail at the outside pitch.
Good luck to the Cards hitting coach in trying to change Diva Jason because Diva knows best.

even if true, I still think they could have gotten more for Heyward than what we did here
Not a chance in hell we were gonna get more for a Heyward that can just walk away from any team he goes to after one year if he chooses.

I swear to God, if they have Gattis playing outfield next year, I'm not watching.
They won't. They want to trade him too and will probably get swindled again like they did today. Yay!

People are overreacting. Heyward wasn't going to resign and you aren't going to get much more for one year of a player who has a ton of potential but hasn't quite grasped it yet. Right now he is a very good player, but he could be elite. You can bet your arse someone is gonna pay him elite money after next year. Braves weren't gonna match. It was a no-brainer to move him.
Then you get an average pitcher with the potential to be very good and you get him for 4 years and cost controlled. Braves fans should be thrilled to get this much IMO.
Also, the reason Fredi is staying on as manager is so we can blame the shitty year on him next year, fire him, and bring in a new manager to manage the new look Braves with a chance to compete in 2016.

I think it's more likely to happen in 2017.
