Of Note:

Takeaways: A-Rod will make more than the Astros.

The Dodgers will likely pass the Yankees for the top spot next year.
ETA: Note that the Yankees and Dodgers outspend the Phillies, the number 3 team, by nearly $60M each. That means they spend roughly 30% more than the 3rd highest paying team.

the last time they won the world series was after a $12 million increase in payroll

No it isn't. If we're talking about the present, let's stay in the present.
Are you 10 years old?
20 years is the present. I'm 28. The Yankees have won 5 titles in my lifetime alone. That's pretty present.
quote:
The past 10 years is a pretty good barometer of recent success.
Why?
I think the past 7 games is a better barometer for recent success. The Yankees are 6-1. The Cards are 5-2. Clearly the Yankees are more recently successful.
All I did there was narrow the scope of my data to support the argument I'm trying to make. Just like you are doing.
quote:
Selective history is selective.
Then why are you using it?
quote:
if the number of championships in the history of your franchise is your lone criterion for "best run MLB franchise,"
What other criterion even matters?
If you are going to talk about running a good business, then let's alter the scope of the thread and discuss "Cardinals are the best run business in Major League Baseball."
But the OP's argument is "Best team in baseball."
quote:
PS - to give you a little nugget because you appear so butt hurt about my conclusion, in the past 63 years, the Yankees have won 9 World Series Titles to the Cardinals 5. Congratulations. You win the argument.
I'm not butt hurt.
I think you are cherry picking pieces of data to support your preconceived opinion.
To you, recent is 10 years, so that's the only data we should look at.

and still not close to top 5 payrolls....the top 5 payrolls should win every year

really?
then why does that almost never happen?
Posted on 5/14/13 at 4:28 pm to TH03
because they are not well run organizations. It use to happen all the time in the 90s

and the yankees have won 27 times so almost never is a stretch...throw in the red sox, phillies, etc and your comment sounds ridiculous

those look like well run organizations to me. 3/5 have a WS in the past 10 years and 4 have been in the WS
Posted on 5/14/13 at 4:31 pm to TH03
but i thought the top payrolls almost never win world series?
Posted on 5/14/13 at 4:31 pm to redfieldk717
San Fran, St Louis, Florida, Arizona, etc
Posted on 5/14/13 at 4:32 pm to redfieldk717
you said they should win every year. I'm saying that doesn't happen. you can't use a couple instances of it happening to say it always happens
Posted on 5/14/13 at 4:34 pm to TH03
i never said it always happens i said they SHOULD

Tigers win the WS this year...........

The Yankees are clearly the standard for titles, and excellence.
However with ALL circumstances considered I would argue that St. Louis or the Oakland Athletics (probably them with the low payroll/stadium etc.) are CURRENTLY the most well run organizations in baseball.
I think Oakland does the most with what they have and considering some HUGE disadvantages they have. The Yankees are always going to be there due to the money factor. Although Cashman is no slouch as he has showed with the savy veteran signings he made this off-season.
