Seems like I see 10 or 20 high profile recruits in football and basketball every year with “handlers”? Any idea what that is? Agent, manager, guardian?

No.

The bag man is on the school side.

The handler is on the player side.

Top recruits (say top 100) literally gets hundreds and hundreds of scholarship offers, sometimes starting at 8th grade.

So for the next five years you have coaches, recruiters, etc., doing what they can to get you on.

Handlers are the gate keepers. The days of sitting down with mommy and daddy and deciding where to go based off education first, sports second are long long gone.

Top College athletes are extremely self centered. They've been told they are above mortals there whole lives.

I feel like we wouldn't have the transfer portal bursting at the seams if these days came back a little bit.

It used to be the high school coach was the main point of contact
Now, it's the people attaching themselves early in high school to these kids, go to a 7 on 7 event and it could be that guy that organizes those teams and brings them all over the country or the AAU coaches in basketball.
It's like that in most sports.
Another example, is most baseball recruiting is done at all these elite travel events during the summer.

I have always considered them to be like an agent or mentor.

Can I be the handler for my son, or does it have to be a non-relative? To date, not a single person at any college has shown interest in him, I just want to be ahead of it all.
