Derrick Brook's pick 6 ain't even mad.

In all seriousness, the Patriots might be good at getting caught over shite like this but if the Bucs were doing it then everybody was probably doing it.

That might be the most efficient Brad Johnson has been in his career though.

I mean for what it's worth, it was for both teams

It seems to me that others are coming to the Patriots defense in an odd way because it is something stupid that a lot of people have done. Players (QBs) have their preferences for the type of ball and it appears that the Patriots aren't the only ones that have done it.

Sounds exactly like the BOUNTY GATE defense...... Except this time it will work because there is not a $1B lawsuit hanging ove rthe leagues head.

Thought this was confusing.

quote:

Last year, I was in Chicago for a story for The MMQB on a Week in the Life of an Officiating Crew. I saw the men on the crew work at inflating the game balls to just the right pressure. In the NFL, footballs have to be filled to a pressure of 12.5 pounds to 13.5 pounds per square inch of air. Each week, teams customarily would be able to prepare 12 footballs for the game. When I say “prepare,” I mean equipments guys and/or ballboys would take the balls before the game and rub the shine and slipperiness off the balls, so they’d be easier for quarterbacks to grip and receivers to catch and running backs to hold, and then return them to the officials in the officials’ locker room.

Each team would also be able to condition six “K” balls, or balls used only by the team’s punter and kicker, for 45 minutes on the day of the game. During the week before the game, each team gets to condition 12 balls for use by its offensive team. In the event of a game with bad weather in the forecast, the NFL would mandate 24 balls be conditioned during the week of the game by each side—12 to be used in the first and the other 12, kept in the locker room at halftime, to be used in the second half. I do not know for sure that this was the procedure on Sunday, but I can assume, with the stakes involved and the bad weather Sunday in the Foxboro area, there were probably 24 balls conditioned by each team.

So they are already allowed to do this within reason. I'm not sure why scuffing it would make the grip all that better.

Same reason most QBs use the laces to get more control of the ball.

This is a bigger deal than people and the media will make it out to be.

Anyone know why he's admitting to this all of a sudden?

They are missing the point as well. Bribery. That is just flat out blatant cheating. It is one thing when you are on the sidelines trying to get the ball the way you like it, but to bribe god knows who to doctor the balls, which are stowed away somewhere, to your specs prior to a championship game.

Exactly this. He paid some dudes under the table to break a rule. It doesn't matter if the act was inconsequential.

I'm assuming that the balls had already been inspected and approved for the game.

difference in the Johnson case is that ALL the balls were the same.

If the INDY balls were similarly under inflated as the New England balls were, we would not have an issue. No one would have had an advantage.

Indy was at a disadvantage just by being there. Nothing you could do to the balls would have changed that.

That's not really true. To use the Aaron Rodgers example, he prefers the balls to be more inflated due to how hard he grips the ball. I'm not sure what Luck or others on the Colts prefer, but having the same equipment does not mean one team cannot have an advantage.

I just think it's funny that people are up in arms over doctored balls when there's no telling how roided up 2/3 of the NFL is.

Professional sports is dirty. Always will be, always has been.

NFL officials accepted money to break a rule, no matter how petty, IS A HUGE DEAL

Yup.

NFL integrity is at an all-time low right now. I don't know what to believe anymore. Every time a play goes under review, I'm subconsciously thinking to myself "Are they going to botch this call on purpose?"
^The fact that I'm not alone here is the bigger issue.

Found more info. There was a rule change. That's why they allow it now. To me, this sort of changes the story.

quote:

The NFL changed the rules in 2006 to allow quarterbacks the chance to scuff and rub up their game balls, breaking them in. Prior to that rule change, only the home team's quarterback was allowed to alter the balls in such a way.
