Brady grew up a 49er fan and was there for The Catch
He could win the next 40 Super Bowls and still say his idol growing up was the GOAT

I have to tell you...I'm not too impressed with Montana's stats. They look...pedestrian.

This is the key.
He knows he's playing basketball on grass.
But I also don't agree that he can't be argued as the GOAT because its about how much you dominated your era.
You CANNOT compare eras but you can compare how much better a player was against his peers at the time they played.
Who knows how good Montana would have been in 1976 when you could tackle receivers and head-slap his linemen.
Which is why its not fair to knock Bradshaw or Stabler for stupid shite like low QB-rating. Almost everyone in the top 25 in QB rating in history played after 1996.
That's why you CAN argue Roger Staubach was the GOAT...his QB rating for his era was SOOOOO much higher compared to his peers than ANYONE in history...and Montana is right behind him.

If we're discounting those things, shouldnt the goat be Marino? Montana had the greatest WR ever and Bill walsh's new innovative west coast offense. Meanwhile Marino's records are just now being broken in a totally different style (pass-happy) league.

You're a sad man.

Brady isn't better than Montana. Montana isn't batter than Brady. They're equals.

He had the greatest WR ever for half his career, and 2 of his 4 SB wins. He defeated Marino in a SB where his best receiver was a running back.
In fact, one could argue Marino had the better true wide receiver corps for that season and game.

So you started watching football in around the time GW Bush (the second Bush) was elected President.

I dont think Montana even has a case anymore. He was always in the discussion based on his superbowls. Brady has now blown that out of the water so he cant claim to be better than Brady based on that. And his statistics arent as good as Marino's in his own era.
Peyton is in the discussion if you want to argue for individual statistics and that Brady benefited from Belichik and the defense.
Marino, Staubach, and Unitas are in the discussion if you want to look at the different eras and compare numbers vs other qbs of their eras.
Thats the list in my opinion. Any of those 5 have a case-Peyton, Brady, Marino, Unitas, Staubach.

I'm confused. Did people not know how to throw a ball until 2000 or something?

Half a career is a long time. And Marino's stats dwarf Montana in the same era. Montana's only argument was the superbowls but now he cant top Brady in that.. Montana was clutch in big games but not the best qb ever.

Stats are for losers. Joe was the best QB to ever play, period.
Let me put it this way, if you had to bet your life on generic team A beating generic team b (who is QBd by a random HOFer), but you got to pick who generic team A's QB was....controlling for physical differences in era who do you pick? If your answer is Dan freaking Marino then i hope you led a pious life.

My eyes.
I don't care if Marino rolled up the yards in meaningless week 14 games while sitting at 6-8 against the Jets and I don't care if Brady got to 5 SBs in an era where the QBs are treated like precious snowflakes and his HOF coach stuck around twice as long as Joe's did.

I would be very tempted to pick Elway in this case. He did this seemingly every other game in the mid to late 80's with no-name receivers and backs. He finally got All Pro and HOF caliber players like Shannon Sharpe and Terrell Davis and won championships.

I know Montana had great wins with 9ers, but his win vs Oilers in the playoffs was a thing of beauty. Oilers beat the shite out of him after every play, and he beat those fricks. It was a thing of beauty.
Chiefs were big underdogs to boot
We were out at the race track betting the horses, and every Brutha was talking shite about Montana and chiefs before and during, we nearly broke even after taking all of their money.
