For the first time, both number one seeds ousted in the first round. Parity gone wild or regular season meaningless?

It's probably happened in football and baseball too...

Parity and that's a great thing about the NHL anyone can win... unlike the NBA where you basically know only 3or4 teams have a chance.

Baseball playoffs really isn't a great way to determine the champions of a league either. College football and the NBA are really the only sports in America where the best team is the champion way more often than not.

Parity is the wrong word but hockey is subject to more randomness and weird bounces

Yeah, the NHL is a lot more comparable to MLB.

For the most part, the teams who should be in the postseason are the ones who qualify and both sports have a certain level of randomness and momentum/hot streaks involved in how they perform.

We've seen plenty of teams in the NHL and MLB who sneak into a wild card or a last seed because they've been hot as frick for the last month and go on to win it all.

Sure, for one game or two.

Not a 4 game sweep dominated by one team.

Neither team had enough grit to win in the playoffs.

Washington showed the blueprint to beat Tampa last year.

One dirty player (Tkachuk) doesn’t make Calgary gritty. They were ripe for an upset it’s just hilarious that the only concern going into the playoffs was goaltending and Smith played outstanding while everyone else sucked.

Crazy how finesse can help you dominate a regular season, but come playoff time you need the bruisers.

These top seeds remind me of the Canucks of 2012.

You dont necessarily need bruisers, but you have to have players willing to fight for pucks.

You also can't get frustrated when you can't score for long stretches. It's the playoffs, scoring is hard.

And it only took NINE total games. It's absolutely amazing not that they lost, but that it was so decisive. Calgary bullied the hell out of Colorado in game one too, and it was like somebody flipped a switch.

Can't speak to Columbus winning, but Colorado was incredibly hot down the stretch and as a Blues fan I was glad to see them get shipped West.

They have a great chance to go to the Cup Final.

This.

I know very little about hockey, but when I watch, I see a LOT of randomness. Like when the puck goes off a guy's skate, off another defender's leg, off the pipe, then into the net. I think any team can get that kind of break, no matter what seed they are.

That's one goal.

If it's an even series, then yes puck luck may decide the outcome.

These #1 seeds were dominated.

Parity and variance are very high in the NHL, which is why upsets in the NHL playoffs are so much more common than other sports.
