The NHL playoff format rewards teams with a streaky goalie that is peaking at the right time.
The playoffs are littered with lower seeds that outperform postseason expectations, because their goalie drops their GAA a goal and a half from the regular season.

I do believe 1 and 2 seeds need more advantages early on, such as only having to win 3 times as opposed to 4 for the lower seed, or have more home games...

That's huge.
One player can't take over a football game. A pitcher can dominate a baseball game, but he needs at least three days rest (which is why college is double elimination).
In hockey a goalie can get hot and turn a 4-3 loss into a 3-2 win.
