In a statement issued on Friday evening, Boise State admitted it had “some hesitation” about ending its longstanding relationship with ESPN as part of the Mountain West’s new TV rights deal and refuted the conference’s claim that this would be the last time the Broncos’ home games would be negotiated separately.

During a conference call on Jan. 9, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said conference members met in December and decided they wanted more equity in future deals. But Boise State said its decision to rejoin the conference in 2012 was predicated, in part, on the right to negotiate its home games separately and that cannot be changed by a conference vote.

“Boise State’s decision to join the conference was predicated on a number of negotiated provisions, including the right to separately negotiate material terms of media rights relating to our home games,” a university spokesperson said in Friday’s statement. “This is stated in our conference agreement and cannot be changed by any vote of the membership or conflicting agreement. We will not support any change to this provision and are in the process of weighing our options to move forward.”

The Mountain West did not immediately return a call seeking a comment on Friday night.

The Mountain West announced its new TV deal on Jan. 9, cutting ESPN out of the mix for regular-season games and handing rights for Boise State home games to Fox and road games to CBS Sports. ESPN played a pivotal role in making Boise State the national brand it was, but the deal with Fox and CBS was just too good to pass up.

The new deal is valued at $270 million, according to Thompson. Boise State’s cut of that should go up from $2.9 million to somewhere in the neighborhood of $5.7 million. That additional revenue was obviously hard to turn down, but Boise State said the possibility of earlier kickoffs and added exposure for the entire conference also went into going along with the deal.

It comes down to whether they think they can make more money controlling their full schedule and TV opportunities. BYU is a unique situation with the LDS Church connection. Is Boise State as a football brand really that valuable versus the security of the MWC?

I kinda feel like Boise getting lost in the wash of the MWC is a bad idea long term

Of course I haven’t seen them on TV in a couple years so maybe they’re already there

Dont think the big 12 would bend over backwards for them. Fox is a pretty big television partner for the big 12

Boise still has the best deal of everyone

They keep all their own bowl money and share everything else. I could see them trying to go independent as they have a name a built in bowl and could go to Sky or WCC for everything else

And Boise State will be another irrelevant Rocky Mountain program that everyone forgets about until a random top 25 SEC or Big Ten teams smacks them around in a rent a win game.

They need the MWC MUCH more than the MWC needs them.

I don’t think Boise would be as resistant in conforming when they’re in a conference where other teams contribute.

Like 15 million members (though only half of those are in the US). The school gets funding from the church so they don’t have the same financial constraints that other institutions have.

Google says 16.3 million globally with 2.1 million in Utah as of the summer of 2019.

Boise doesn’t need the MWC. The MWC begged them back and gave them all the money Boise wanted.

I can’t imagine that deal they just signed is even discussed if it isn’t for Boise. Any kind of deal the MWC gets, Boise should get a triple share. No one wants to watch that conference anyway but if I was going to, I’d be much more inclined to watch Boise than Wyoming, San Jose State or Nevada.

Could Boise bolt and receive an invite to the American? Or would Independence be their only viable option?

I’ve said too many times to count, when UConn leaves the AAC, the AAC needs to aggressively pursue Boise St, BYU and Colorado St

AAC East:

#20 Navy
#21 Cincinnati
#24UCF
Temple
Tulane
USF
ECU

AAC West:

#17 Memphis
#23 Boise St
BYU
Colorado St
SMU
Houston
Tulsa
