Bob Iger says he and Jimmy Pitaro thought ESPN coverage “swung a little bit too far away from the field” to societal and political issues

quote:

One of the biggest recent criticisms of ESPN has been the line that they’ve been “too political,” something even stated by President Trump at one point (after Jemele Hill’s tweets about him). While there’s substantial debate about if that is a fair criticism and if it has anything to do with the business challenges they’re facing, it’s certainly become part of the narrative, and ESPN has done a whole lot to try and get away from the idea that they’re political in any way. That’s especially true under new president Jimmy Pitaro, who told employees in March “I do not believe that we’re a political organization.”

quote:

It appears that approach is endorsed from the very top. Disney CEO Bob Iger recently took part in a The Hollywood Reporter conversation with THR editorial director Matthew Belloni (after THR named Iger the most powerful person in media), and answered a general question about ESPN by talking about how Pitaro’s “brought back some balance”:

quote:

You’ve had shake-ups at the various businesses this past year. How has ESPN changed specifically, if at all?

I have nothing but praise for the job Jimmy Pitaro has done at ESPN. There’s been a big debate about whether ESPN should be focused more on what happens on the field of sport than what happens in terms of where sports is societally or politically. And Jimmy felt that the pendulum may have swung a little bit too far away from the field. And I happen to believe he was right. And it’s something, by the way, that I think John Skipper had come to recognize as well. But Jimmy coming in fresh has had the ability to address it, I think, far more aggressively and effectively. He has brought back some balance.

I'm glad they admitted it. Identifying the problem is the first step to fixing it.

When they get rid of awful country music, guest pickers, and Tom Ranaldi, I'll come back. The shows suck regardless of politics of them. Gameday is unwatchable. Game day Final is also unwatchable now. frick those shitty products.

They’ve been moving away from it while also embracing gambling more, especially when it comes to football. Great moves IMO

Now they need to bring back some of their great classic personalities that they've been shite canning the last few years. That's probably a pipe dream though.

Why does everything need to be qualified these days. I’m guessing the vast majority of sports fans from any political leaning with a half functioning brain can see it’s a fair criticism.

Bob Iger, the hero we need, but not the one we deserve right now.

I agree to a certain extent. I think there needs to be a balance when it comes to this because I don't want a full scale gambling show.

It’s amazing that it takes some people this long to figure it out. I always assume that the people in these positions are extremely out of touch with the average person and will grease the squeaky wheel.

Espn’s share of the sports entertainment industry is probably trending down. We are in an age of technology where content can be had. We don’t have to watch a sportscaster talk about PAC-10 football to see the highlights and commentary we want anymore.

don't care for the music, but I love when Rinaldi makes me cry on Saturday morning. Anyone that hates a Rinaldi story, hates life.
