The problem was that throughout the entire season Dave Stapleton was put at first base in the 9th inning for defensive purposes. For some reason McNamara didn't put Stapleton in. Maybe he wanted Buckner to be on the field when they won it. Stapleton would have made the play. Also don't forget the Red Sox blew a 3 run lead in game 7.

I can’t believe people on this thread are acting like anybody remembers anything about Buckner except for his legs.

Buckner played 22 seasons and never struck out 3x in a game. Not once

Very little power or speed - just a guy who always puts wood on the ball.

Before that terrible broken ankle he suffered, he actually did have pretty good wheels. Good enough to play outfield.

So sad how he was erroneously vilified for tge Game 6 error. The Mets had already tied it.

This has always baffled me. People treated that play as if he’d have made it, that would have clinched the series. Wrong.

And though Red Sox fans did “forgive” him, it took them winning a World Series (or 2, can’t remember when) to do it. frick them.

I didn’t know he was battling any illness. He was a very underrated player.

.003% of major leaguers in history have more hits than Buckner. Only two active players among them.

Stapleton would have made the play.

He would not have. Stanley was not getting over to 1st to cover. No way Stapleton could have beaten Mookie to the bag. It was a no win situation even if Buckner gets the ball. He never should have been the blame. Buckner was in the perfect place to play the ball. Stapleton may not have played as far over to the line and may have had an even harder play to make.
